Things

1. I had an idea for my Doctor Who Minor Characters Ficathon fic! (I was hoping a prompt would give me inspiration, but there have been less, and then I had inspiration of my own. I am now, some hours later, thinking it maybe wasn't a good idea, but I seem to be committed.) I do also need to edit and beta my [community profile] hetswap fic. I keep telling myself it is all done, which is not actually true.

2. I get so used to all the people in old things I watch being dead (or immediately dropping dead on the spot) that sometimes I forget to look them up, assuming that they are dead, and then they surprise me by dying anyway because apparently they were in fact still alive (until they weren't).

Which is to say that the very excellent Alec McCowen died a week or so ago.

3. There should probably be a third thing, but there isn't. This post was mainly 2.

1. The Obscure & British Commentfest continues! \o/ It is my birthday weekend now, so I shall be pimping again, at least a little, to see if I can poke it into some further weekend action (and then I promise I shall at least stop pimping). It's going nicely and we have a whole bunch of fills (including Spike from Buffy paying a visit to Nouvion and Steel getting sold suits from Mr Humphreys, just for starters).

Thanks to everyone who has helped promote it! It really does make a difference. I also have some rebloggable Tumblr posts, if anyone wants to give it a shout over there. (Most of the time when I complain about Tumblr, that's just me, because I was clearly a person made for LJ and therefore not Tumblr material, but you do realise when trying to promote something multi-fandom like this where the tag-tracking just isn't going to help much, that you have nowhere to go and are totally reliant on reblogs. If I'm missing some major fandom newsletter-type submission blog, let me know.) Anyway, please don't feel obliged, despite my over-thinking stuff, but if you are willing and able, the posts are here, here, here and here. Thank you!

1a. A side-effect of the Commentfest and LJ's relative quietness is that I get temporarily shunted to top of the day's LJs. (And, yes, such power! It puts me up above the gods...! etc. etc. And then I crash straight back into my usual obscurity.)

Anyway, the point of this is that LJ has a button you can press to automatically friend the top 15 journals, so I get random friending during the fest. If you have friended me over the last week and you did it on purpose and aren't a bot, please do comment to this post and wave at me, and I'll friend you back. (I just don't want to friend people who wanted someone popular and interesting! It would be embarrasing all round.)

2. Not entirely about the fest, but definitely Obscure & British - I have been writing some things! Here is an NYR fic, two fills for the fest, and a belated Trope Bingo effort, which can all be found over at AO3 (and the fills via the Masterpost, too, of course):

While I was ill I also rewatched most of Mr Palfrey of Westminster (starring Alec McCowen, Caroline Blakiston, and Clive Wood) and remembered how good it was once it got going (and how little of it there is, sadly) so it was my next choice for an icon set.

Enough of the moaning; I pulled myself together enough to make some icons over the last few days. The themes come from the icons200* thing I was doing ages ago. (I went to find it and realised I'd stopped because obviously this set had to be Seven & Ace and I needed more screencaps. And, lo, I was unwell enough not to grudge time spent screencapping last week.)

Now, what on earth to icon next...?

*I wanted a reason to icon (I fall so easily into thinking it just pointless & it's not) and picked the theme list from the now-defunct icons200 comm and was doing each installment of 10 themes + 10 artists' choice (like a 20by20), with option to swap out prompts if I didn't like them. I might continue again now sometimes.

1. One of the joys of Yuletide is stumbling over things you never knew about before. One this year that amused me muchly was the music video of Shakespeare's Sister's Stay. Now, this is a song that I recorded off the radio when I was a teenager (onto a tape, I'm a historical thingumy) and I was always fascinated by it - I reasoned that it was all one voice and maybe some fairy queen who seemed nice but wasn't (a la some Tam Lin/Thomas the Rhymer thing, because I had been reading Fire and Hemlock by that point), but NO. That is not what it is about!

As it turns out, voice one is a woman trying to get her dying boyfriend to stay with her and voice 2 is Death. Who in this wears a sparkly catsuit and does an outrageous dance because... er... um... it's an 80s music video? My favourite bit is Death's eye-roll at the end because, frankly someone's who's been doing a sparkly OTT catsuit dance like that has no grounds on which to eye-roll at people. Oh, and for some reason, it all seems to be happening in space because why not?

Anyway, I'm grateful to the requester because otherwise I would never have watched that and my life would have been the poorer for it.

2. Talking of amusing vids, it's been at least a year or two since I mentioned that Julius Caesar Poker Face vid, and every so often a person just needs to remind themselves that it exists and laugh themselves silly at the combination of Richard Pasco and David Collings and their ridiculously opposite faces set to appropriate-inappropriate pop music. Do not worry if you do not like Julius Caesar, 1970s BBC theatricality, Lady Gaga, or Brutus/Cassius. None of those things should come between you and it:

3. And now for something completely different, because otherwise I'll forget again, I wrote some more [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales:

Two in the same AU timeline:
Double Cross (PG, 4367 words. Edward Iveson, Julia Graves, Rudy Graves.) Julia’s having nothing but trouble with men – her brother seems to be in danger and Mr Iveson’s trying to buy her off with sandwiches…

Not Just a Passing Phase (PG, 5262 words. Edward Iveson, Julia Graves, Rudy Graves, Elizabeth Long.) The last thing Julia wants is for Mr Iveson to be lying dead in her kitchen with her brother to blame for it…

Faulty Connections (All ages, 1176 words. Anna, Liesa.) Liesa and Anna have the opposite problem when it comes to family.

I had such nice questions for this, but then it turned out I couldn't write the answers once summer really got going. However, it's now Not Summer, so...

For [livejournal.com profile] a_phoenixdragon What show did you watch obsessively as a kid?

My first reaction was Dungeons & Dragons and while that would be true, I probably got far more obsessed with that when it was repeated when I was a teenager. However, one childhood obsession was with the serialised French-Japanese cartoon The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Basically, Cities of Gold was a year out of my life - I think I was around 9 or 10? I think everybody in my class was obsessed with it, too. When my best friend had to go into hospital, she made me promise faithfully to write to her what happened in the next episode* (and then she watched it in hospital anyway, the ungrateful thing). Even my Mum registered the fact that we watched a TV series about someone called Esteban.

While there were other serialised cartoons at that time, there weren't many, not like this (and for some reason they were almost all adaptations of literary classics with animals instead of people) so this was something special.

I've had a few answers for this meme done or semi-done for a while, so it's about time I posted one, and here goes - From [livejournal.com profile] femme_slash_fan: Favourite TV shows almost nobody knows about and should watch? (Seriously... I need more stuff)

Shows that nobody else knows about seems to sum up my entire fannish life of late (and always, really), but since [livejournal.com profile] femme_slash_fan specified "and should watch", that's a whole other thing. I have plenty of strange things I love - I don't necessarily think anyone else should have to watch them!

I avoided anything with its own (reasonably active) fandom, like Blake's 7, Sapphire & Steel and The Avengers (obviously, people have heard of them, if they're being fannish about them), and anything I thought was too inaccessible to count as something people should watch. What counts as something 'nobody's heard of' is so relative anyway. (Some of these things really don't count if you're British but do count if you live anywhere else. What can I do?). Of course, much of it assumes some willingness to watch studio-bound, video-taped old British TV of some kind, which I know not everyone is up for. If you are, or you're willing to try, these aren't bad places to start.

Anyway, here's a list! Not in any particular order, really. (I numbered them so I would know to stop if I went over ten, because that would be silly.)

Under here for the list!! )

30 icons made for the [community profile] hc_bingo square "hugs". I went back through all my screen caps looking for any iconable & expressive hugs and this was the result. Given the odd things I screen cap, it's a little motley, but on the other hand it covers a whole range of hugs from 1959-2013, which is quite nice in itself, after all. (Even if I may have used a pic to icon before, these are all new for the challenge.)

(I still have space for more topics if anyone hasn't left me one yet! The original post is here should you wish to.)

[profile] ramasi requested: Book-to-movie (or tv) adaptations you like? (Or didn't like, if you feel like ranting).

My first thought was that this was a very nice question, the second that this could be a very long post if I'm not careful. So I made myself choose 5 favourites, setting myself a rough guideline for inclusion - something along the lines of "it needs to be something I've watched at least twice and should be where I read the book first". (And then promptly broke that rule with my first choice, as you do.) (The pics in this post, btw, are my screencaps, excepting those for the first two, which I stole from Google.)

Apparently Maggie Stables who played Evelyn Smythe, Six's lovely and awesome audio companion, has just died.

And just to be really cheerful on the subject of Six-era ladies, also in the news this weekend, was Lynda Bellingham, who is dying of cancer. (She's stopping her chemotherapy in November, and the timing should give her one last Christmas.) In addition to being known here as "the OXO lady", she was the Inquisitor at Six's Trial (and I believe has since also been in the Gallifrey audio series, so make this a particularly bad weekend for Big Finish fans.

*is very sad*

Probably, in honour of the one companion who could really keep Six in order, a sort of final salute of chocolate cake is required...

Following on from Kate O'Mara earlier in the year, it seems an exceptionally bad year for awesome ladies who knew the Sixth Doctor. :-/
lost_spook: (dw - six)
For the best bit of DW, naturally. ;-p

The first is more dramatic, the second is my favourite, but then it is for the best DW season:

And now, forgive me spamming you, but it's been a while and I think it must be time for one of those David Collings picspams I warned everybody about when I friended them... (I always try to be amusing, though.)

Anyway, I mainly wanted to share some pics because it was obviously made not long before(?) S&S's Assignment 3 and therefore there are times when David Collings looks like 18th C!Silver (and he doesn't usually look like Silver in other things), which could be useful as reference for S&S fans, obviously. (Not that I think there should be 18th!Silver fic... Oh, wait, that's a lie.) Plus, as ever, Things That Amused Me.

I have made a fanvid and I don't hate it! I made it for some of the random TV I've been watching lately, so it is obscure (but I don't care). Also, there is more dancing. Apparently this is a thing now and all my vids will have dancing in. Even if it's completely inappropriate...

Smile on my Face )

Sorry for the slight spammage - the previous lot of icons were made mostly ages ago. These, um, well... I have no excuse, but 92 icons from the 1987 movie Mannequin. (A bonkers, tacky but joyful 1980s tale of true love, wacky time travel and window dressing, not forgetting the pop video montage in the middle... For those who don't know it, it's the film Starship's Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now is from. It may the most 1980s thing ever.) Featuring Kim Cattrall, Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, and Meshach Taylor. (What can I say? I watched this as a teenager and I still find it ridiculously cheering.)
