Hail, fellow travellers, and well met. My Dreamwidth is mostly for fic, recs, icons, vids and fannish nonsense - fic/vids/icons etc. remain open, but the rest has got largely flocked these days (people were scraping entries via tags, unfortunately). I'm terribly obscure and multi-fannish, but generally happy to make new friends.

My fic:

My vids:

Current & Past Prompt tables etc: apocabingo card | genprompt_bingo card (Round 11) | Historical for [community profile] who_allsorts | Hurt/Comfort Bingo Card (Round 8) | 100 Element Prompts | Shakespeare Plays Watched.

Also the 500 Prompts Meme. runaway_tales: Masterpost here.

Notes on permission: Any remixes etc. based on fanworks of mine are fine - go ahead, and do let me know; I'd be thrilled. And, obviously, credit is nice. No posts made here to be reproduced elsewhere, thanks. If you wish to link to any open posts, of course, please do so!

Friending: New friends are always welcome, but if you'd like me to friend you back and we haven't previously interacted, please drop a comment here so I know who you are, otherwise I'll assume that you merely wanted to add my public entries to your reading circle.

In the event of me seemingly getting worse at writing birthday ficlets, instead of better, I have for the past couple of years, taken the Unconventionalcourtship Generator and had a flash-fic writing session with it, tackling any prompts where I felt able to write both characters for [personal profile] john_amend_all's birthday. The end of June was particularly bad, so here it is, only slightly delayed.

One of the results that came up was clearly something I thought would amuse [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2, who also had a birthday around the same time, so, I'm calling that a belated present also. Plus some bonus summaries I failed at writing. (The whole package is like a bundle of those tacky plasticky things you get at the seaside, but I had fun.) I did this on different days, before and during my family's visit, so it all got a bit out of hand. But still mostly not even shippy. /o\

I don't seem to have been writing much lately, so I did what I usually do in these circumstances: the poetry meme!

1: Pick five fandoms. List them in alphabetical order.

2: Visit this site to find your first RANDOM POEM OF POWER. Write down the 5th line (yes, even if it's an E.E. Cummings poem and you wind up with an apostrophe). Repeat five times and - you guessed it - list 'em in alphabetical order! (No cheating, mind! This is a challenge and it's always been about creativity.)

3: I think you can see where this is going. Write a very quick 50-word half-drabble for each fandom (try to do it all in one sitting - make your brain explode!), using the line from the poem as a prompt. You don't have to include it in the half-drabble - it's just inspiration.

4: Bravo! Have a cookie.

*noms virtual cookie*

(These are all only 50 words, so I don't think they're really spoilery unless you know stuff already, they're just probably incomprehensible, but possibly for DW S10, Ripper Street S5 and Spooks S10. Ish. I did cheat, because I didn't want a comma, but at least I managed alphabetical order, and my brain also did not explode.)

I haven't talked much about Doctor Who, because I tend to enjoy it and find that enjoyment often diminished by discussion, especially in circles that are more negative about Twelve and Steven Moffat than my heart will ever be, but I have indeed been watching and enjoying and loved the finale very much. Anyway, here are some related fanworks I have also enjoyed:

[personal profile] purplefringe has already made a Bill fanvid & it is a truly lovely thing, you will be unsurprised to hear.

[personal profile] selenay has been writing a series of Bill episode tags (for the first few eps, so far) and they're just great. I was trying to think which one in particular to rec, but, really, they're all great.

And, via [personal profile] eve11, who clearly has the best taste in fic:

Love, That Loosener of Limbs by amatalefay (G, 253 words. Bill Potts/Sappho, Twelve.)

“Like, finally here's a poem that isn't just some bloke whining about how a beautiful girl won’t give him sex, and it's basically ‘sweet mother, I’m too gay to do my chores, blame Aphrodite’. Like, honestly? Most relatable thing I’ve read in years.”

Bill meets Sappho.

Tiny but perfect. <3

And The Last Age Should Show Your Heart by Quanna. (G, 1854 words. Missy, brief mentions/cameos of others.)

The Doctor saves the Master, one final time, and gives her the universe to look after in his place.

A post 'the Doctor Falls' AU in which the Doctor dies, and the Master goes on; without hope, without witness, without reward.

What it says; really clever and sharp and a great thing to read following The Doctor Falls.

(I hope you can tell that this is not the sort of post where you tell me things you dislike about DW. If that's what you'd like to do, I recommend instead going to [community profile] who_at_50 instead which is great for proper discussion, squee, grumbling and all the usual sorts of reactions. Consider that my final rec for the day. ;-p)

[personal profile] el_staplador requested Meet Me at Midnight for the Fic Commentary Meme.

This was a recent one, written to finish off one of my remaining [community profile] who_allsorts prompts on my Fourth Doctor claim, the prompt being, "I will go alone," which, in conjunction with Four, made me think of the line from Androids of Tara where the Doctor says, "They always want you to go alone when you're walking into a trap, have you noticed that?" So I thought it could be fun to play with that being the Doctor's voice of experience speaking there.

I picked the prompt set out a couple of years ago now, and the vague idea had been lurking for a while, and then suddenly the full idea just struck me, and I wrote it and it was a lot of fun. I do have my original notebook version, but it didn't see a lot of changes, overall.

Each segment was, hopefully (and judging by comments, fairly successfully), a typical scene with each Team TARDIS of Four's era. (Well, barring Four, Romana & Adric, but the E-Space trilogy is still on my to-watch pile.)

For the Fic Commentary Meme, [personal profile] sovay asked for there was a darkness, call it solitude.

This was written back in 2012 after re-reading Joan Aiken's Midnight Is A Place, no doubt brought on by watching the 1970s ITV adaptation, but that isn't a patch on the book, even if it does have David Collings in.

It was a while ago, and I can't find the original version in my notebook, either, so I'm not sure how much I can remember at this distance, but it was a fic I had to write and felt pleased with, despite its obscurity.* (I don't know what use my notebooks are sometimes. This one has my Yuletide 2011 fic in and later my Yuletide 2012 fic, so you would think that something written in spring 2012 would be in it, but no. Also that entire notebook is almost wall to wall S&S. 0_o)

there was a darkness, call it solitude )

For [personal profile] a_phoenixdragon in the Fic Commentary Meme, who asked for a commentary on Unrelated (The Loop the Loop to Affinity Remix)

This was a Remix fic, so a lot of it is in reaction to the original fic, in this case [personal profile] scripsi's Sliding Down the Razorblades of Life and other parts of her River/Master series. Doing a Remix is always a slightly different process to other writing - you're responding to someone else's work, so my first move is to skim through my assigned remixee's work to see what jumps out at me. And then, I don't know, I read and read that until something comes. I hesitated over this because to remix something that was part of a series possibly made things a little more complicated than was wise.

For [personal profile] eve11 in the Fic Commentary Meme, this segment of Prospero's Daughter, a fic for Big Finish's Unbound series of AU Doctors (published to celebrate DW's 40th anniversary in 2003). This one was for Full Fathom Five, with the AU in that audio being essentially, what if the Doctor went dark? (With the Doctor in question being played by David Collings, so clearly it was a strange and explicable thing that I found myself listening to it, obv.).

I also have a bit of an odd relationship with the fic, because it was the first thing I wrote properly after relapsing with the ME in Jan 2011, and it left me with no mental concentration for a month afterwards, which was pretty terrifying. I thought I'd never write again, and even if it was probably only a month or two later I was writing a tiny tiny Sapphire & Steel ficlet, it felt like a lot longer, and it still took me another year before I could manage that many words again, and I panicked about whether or not it was any good afterwards. It became a Fic of Doom.*

For the Fic Commentary Meme (still open if anyone wants me to talk a lot (or not) about a snippet of my fic), [personal profile] shyfoxling asked for commentary on Timey Wimey Antics, a found poem (of sorts), made from AO3 tags from the Doctor Who fandom back in 2013.

Timey Wimey Antics )

Also, I couldn't find my original of this, but I did find my Tag Wrangler found Tag poem. I'm not sure why it was abandoned & left unfinished; I probably was feeling stupid having made another terrible mistake while wrangling and buried it, but it is here. It is fairly accurate about tag-wrangling:

One last [community profile] trope_bingo fic! Yes, it's dodgy AAL! sex pollen fic, because somebody had to do it. Even if it probably should have been someone other than me. Although, I do love the fact that the sex pollen plot is in no way any less ridiculous or improbable than most of the actual plots. (<3)

And another [community profile] trope_bingo piece! This one, the huddling for warmth prompt I'd wanted to do for Nina/Jimmy/Vincent since I first watched Manhunt in January. Unlike the other, it should be reasonably comprehensible, although there are some references to the outcome of ep8 (A Different Kind of War). But mainly typical early-series bickering, really.

I'm determined to get a line for my [community profile] trope_bingo for amnesty, and I'm so near - I just need to type a couple more things up! So, I went to my notebook and instead typed up this for [community profile] hc_bingo (for "nausea," although mostly the metaphorical kind), because I'm contrary like that.

(I had to rewatch an episode for it. Probably I shouldn't have done it quite so soon after watching the OUaT finale, because in comparison the special Christmas episode where someone has to murder their dearest friend ever felt like a Dementor in TV-form, sucking all the joy out of life. Knowing where it ends up, I have to say Manhunt is the most cynical, bleak, twisted up look at WWII I've ever seen. My experience isn't massive, but even so...)

Anyway, as I may have mentioned, Vincent, one of our Extra Specially Terrible Resistance agents has top Nazis falling over themselves to die for him, one way or another, so I wrote fic about it. Even if old telly means never knowing how to spell anyone's surnames.* Spoilers abound, though, so this will probably be read by no one ever, alas. But I feel accomplished. (I just need to write Nina/Vincent/Jimmy now for my [community profile] trope_bingo "huddling for warmth" square, because if you have a practically canon OT3 who have to hide in barns and hedges in a freezing winter, it would be ungracious not to do it, really. After I've typed up the squares that'll get me an amnesty Bingo.)

War Is Love, Love Is War (1342 words) by lost_spook

Summary: “What is war? War is love.” Vincent, and the Fascists who love him.

(Or, if you're a fellow old Brit telly lover, this fic is mostly depressing, but partly Peter Barkworth/Julian Glover, and Peter Barkworth/James Maxwell, and Peter Barkworth/Robert Hardy (ish). Blame canon, not me.)

I actually wrote this at the same time as Meet Me At Midnight, but it's a little odd, and I forgot about it. However, it finishes off my last prompt for my Fourth Doctor table at [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts, so yay.

Notes/Warnings: For the prompt "steal the gold." Fourth Doctor, Leela, Original Characters, K9. Outsider POV, implied death.
Summary It’s been a frightening day, and now there are some very odd burglars in Miya’s house...

My fic is now a thing! It's very weird, I know, but hopefully also entertaining, and at last Count Scarlioni has fic. This involved having to rewatch City of Death for research, which, as you must admit, is about as good as research gets. (I also listened to the commentary and Julian Glover wanted to know about Scaroth's love life/lives, so I felt all vindicated for writing weird borderline-shippy fic. I mean, if Julian Glover asked for it, who am I to disoblige? ;-p)

Anyway, my entry for the Minor Characters Ficathon 2017:

Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Title: Gothic Romance
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 7369 words
Characters/Pairings: Scaroth | Count Scarlioni/Clara Splinter, Great Intelligence Splinter (plus bonus guest appearances).
Notes/Warnings: For inevitable Clara splinter death, mainly, plus slight forced marriage of convenience dodginess. With many thanks to Persiflage for beta-ing it at short notice. Written for [livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest 2017; also for the [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts prompt “love is done,” [community profile] trope_bingo square “fake relationship,” and [livejournal.com profile] hc_bingo square “tentacles.”
Summary: It is a fact universally acknowledged that any beings splintered in time will inevitably run into each other. No law says it has to end well, though…

My other [community profile] hetswap fic was my first ever pinch hit, for [personal profile] glinda, who had included Eight/Charley in their requests, and so I had to try. And incidentally, now my sign-ups to assignments ratio is only one out! (I suppose that means that to keep it correct, now I have to pick up one more pinch hit and that'll fix it.)

So, that was fun, although I feel slightly bad because maybe a better, shippier person would have picked it up if I hadn't foiled them by snaffling it, but oh well.

[community profile] hetswap has been revealed now! My assignment was (in a truly shocking, astonishing, unbelieveable turn of events) for Paranoidangel.

(Although to be fair, usually she gets assigned to me, whereas I think I've only got her once before.)

Anyway, that meant I got to write some B7 Tarrant/Dayna fic (which, lol, was not super-popular over at the fest):

In other reading, [community profile] hetswap went live today and I had both my gift fic and an unexpected unofficial gift fic (from ParanoidAngel):

My gift fic, a sweet and funny little Emma Swan/Captain Hook fic:

Summary: Emma and Killian go on a date, but something gets in the way of enjoying it fully.

And my unofficial, non-anonymous gift, which was much fun and introduced Evelyn and Six to the cake!fic genre, something that was way overdue, all considered:

Chocolate Cake, a Cardigan and a Coat (1173 words) by paranoidangel

A while back, [livejournal.com profile] hyarrowen and I were clearly having like thoughts on Major Richter & Dr Martel-related hurt/comfort, and I finally got my idea to work. I wrote a fic for this year's New Year's Resolutions, for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, because I'd been trying to think of something a little more Jonathan-centric (although everybody else still got in on the act; I can't help it!) and also reflecting on the differences between the book and the TV adaptation and this bit of pre-canon exploration happened:
