lost_spook: light + Ruth Evershed looking upwards (spooks - Ruth!)
So, after I started feeling a little better a couple of weeks ago, I gradually picked up some things I'd already finished/nearly finished and started poking at them & as a result have posted most of them in the appropriate places, but not linked here.

1. A Ruth Evershed Character Manifesto (Spooks) for [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers (containing 13 recs, much blathering about the greatness of Ruth and ships and possible ships, plus some pics and gifs). (I've been chipping away at this for at least a year now.)

2. I looked at my [livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest WIP and found it was much more complete and okay than I'd thought and tidied it up. It's here:

Self-Made Man (956 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: The Kandyman & Gilbert M
Characters: Gilbert M (Doctor Who), The Kandyman (Doctor Who)
Additional Tags: Serial: s149 The Happiness Patrol, Backstory, Canonical Character Death, Community: dw_guestfest, Community: trope_bingo
Summary: "Close to the Kandyman, were you?" / "I made him." Gilbert M and the Kandyman.

3. Someone reminded me that I once wrote a crossover fic for [livejournal.com profile] intoabar, which at the time I defaulted on due to being too ill to cope with the editing from my beta. I poked around my memory stick full of fic and found it and the beta-notes (which weren't actually difficult; I was just that ill back then) and posted that too:

Bar-Room Brawl (2512 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Downton Abbey, Doctor Who (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Tegan Jovanka, Tom Branson, Fifth Doctor, Vislor Turlough
Additional Tags: Crossover, Community: intoabar, Walk Into A Bar, Aliens, Fights, 1920s
Summary: Tegan Jovanka walks into a bar… and meets Tom Branson!

4. And then I did manage to finish typing up a thing for [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales, which is also filling a square for [community profile] trope_bingo (au: historical), and I think most things are now at least back to my usual sort of hit and miss abilities. \o/

Midnight Escapade (All ages, 1905 words. Edward Iveson/Julia Graves, Christy Graves, Amyas Harding.) It's a gratuitous Regency AU that I wrote at Christmas when I was reading too many terrible Regency romances.

I've managed a few of the AU Meme ficlets so far (and a few still yet to come). I have been posting them to AO3 & of course in the comments, but in the absence of other things going on, I thought I might as well round them up here, too:

Liz Shaw )

Justin Alastair, Duke of Avon )

Adam Adamant & Georgina Jones )

Harry Pearce/Ruth Evershed )

So, someone gave me the Spooks film for Christmas. I have thoughts, but it was clearly more important to first write fic for Spy!Elizabeth Bennet Jennifer Ehle's character, so I did.

Title: Practice to Deceive
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 605
Characters/Pairings: Ruth Evershed/Geraldine Maltby, mentions of Ruth/Harry.
Notes/Warnings: None. It’s not even spoilery for The Greater Good. Set somewhere between late S9 & early S10. For [community profile] trope_bingo square “love triangle”. I mean, you can't put Elizabeth Bennet in Spooks and expect me not to ship her with Ruth, even if this quote didn't exist.
Summary: It’s not only Harry who’s preoccupied with a certain person, it seems.

Also here on AO3.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: PG
Word Count: 410
Characters/Pairings: Ruth Evershed/Harry Pearce, Beth Bailey
Notes/Warnings: None, save typical Spooks-angstiness. Set somewhere in S9; no spoilers.
Summary: It always hurts, or it ought to. That’s the eternal problem.

1. I had a bad few days for various reasons, and, as ever, I tend to slip up on LJ when that happens. I'm caught up again, but apologies if I missed things. Today feels a little better at least! (Nothing terrible happened, but I went very low & technology failed on me at some points - if anyone knows of a good alternative to the VLC-player that isn't either madly fiddly & thus slow or also affected by this aspect ratio bug re. screencaps, I would be happy to hear about it. The only reason I have VLC Player is for screencapping. I do have another program that does it, but it's fiddly & stupid in many ways so I only use it when I'm forced. Also my little TV/DVD player broke yesterday, which is almost in the terrible category. I feel ridiculous that one person should need two TVs, but getting rid of the proper one downstairs would be silly & unhelpful and I can't quite get by yet without my little one to hand for the lowest days when downstairs is too much to handle. :-/)

2. Naturally, in the middle of this (well, prior to the TV-demise), I applied my usual solution of watching old TV with favourite actors and reached the episode of Hadleigh that starred James Maxwell. Hadleigh is not a show that goes in for villains, but they made an exception for James Maxwell. However, it was a nice role and nobody attached anything to his face whatsoever, so overall that was a win. I'll do a picspam and waffle more about that sometime. (Obviously I braved my annoying program to cap that one. But. Argh.) (I was meant to be watching the previous episode, but it was by the same person who kept writing about people wanting to impregnate everybody in Survivors and I promised myself that if he wrote one word about pregnancy, I was skipping to James Maxwell. I thought that was a joke, but the episode was about someone thinking she was pregnant. Dear God, all these 70s writers with weird obsessions that people keep letting them write...! /o\ I skipped to James Maxwell and was very happy to do so. Even if he was villainous.)

3. Anyway, nice things! Remix Redux went live this morning last night* & I had the lovely surprise of discovering that someone had remixed my Spooks ficlet where Ruth and Harry live happily ever after running a bookshop in Devon. So now there is more Ruth/Harry/Bookshop/can't stop being spies ever fic in the world & I rec it heartily to anyone who knows Spooks:

All Russians are Spies (The Retirement Remix) (1278 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Ruth Evershed/Harry Pearce
Characters: Ruth Evershed, Harry Pearce
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, bookshops
Summary:

Ruth's happy, running a second hand bookshop in Devon. Harry, however, is bored.

(I've read/looked at a few other fics, too, and I think I might have guessed at least three authors in the process, but I have some reading to do later on when I might be properly awake. Remix Madness won't go live until probably actually tomorrow for me).

4. Working on an hc_bingo square still, though! Should be done soon! (I mean, that square, not the card, or even a row yet, obv.)

* It was this morning for me!
lost_spook: light + Ruth Evershed looking upwards (spooks - Ruth!)
I've had this fic (for [community profile] hc_bingo square "secret identity revealed") hanging around almost finished for a while, so I've finally done the last tweaks & here goes. I always said one day I was going to write a Spooks fic where there really was an apocalypse and Tom ran the country while Ruth ran him*, although I'm not sure this was what I had in mind...

Light on a Hill (3166 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences

Characters: Tom Quinn (Spooks), Ruth Evershed, Malcolm Wynn-Jones
Additional Tags: Community: hc_bingo, Identity, Apocalypse, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Season/Series 02, Implied/Referenced Character Death, References to Shakespeare
Summary: ”I think the king is but a man, his fears be of the same relish as ours.” It’s the end of days, and Ruth and Tom are having delusions of grandeur, but then, what’s new?

* It's been over 11 years since 2.5 now. Apparently I'm never getting over it, but I have no regrets. Except about the aliens.

Something I wrote for the Obscure & British Commentfest (which has had a few more things posted lately, some of them wonderful (and for me!!!)):

Secrets Are A Tricky Thing (702 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences

Characters: Ruth Evershed, Tom Quinn (Spooks)
Additional Tags: Obscure and British Commentfest, Angst, Fluff, Season/Series 02, Mild Hurt/Comfort
Summary:

Ruth and Tom and a moment. (S2)

(I... think I might actually be going to write my Ruth/Tom post-acpocalypse fic for [community profile] hc_bingo now. Writing that made me suddenly feel there's fic in me for them after all. 0_o)

(ETA: You know what this means. I might have to watch 2.5 again. Oh, the pain and hardship...)
lost_spook: (spooks - ruth!)
I'm sorry, I ended up being tired all the time and not posting. Anyhow, [community profile] fandom_stocking went live yesterday and I had some lovely things in my stocking, left me by some very, very kind people.

You can find all the goodies here and, my, they are marvellous! I had three Sapphire and Steel fics and a Blake's 7/Sapphire and Steel crossover from [personal profile] annariel, [personal profile] amaresu, [personal profile] kaffyr and [personal profile] swordznsorcery. They are all great and they all have Silver in them. *is very happy*

There were also good wishes and some beautiful graphics from people, including a Sapphire and Steel wallpaper, some gorgeous icons of Nicola Walker as Ruth Evershed in Spooks from [personal profile] dreamer_98. (I may not mention Spooks so often, but my love for Ruth will never die.) I am using one now (on Dreamwidth). Over on LJ, I shall attempt to edit the entry and use the Public Eye one made for me by eve11, who even went Googling Alfred Burke images to make icons for me. (♥)

[personal profile] liadtbunny also took pity on me in my obscurity and wrote me a Public Eye/Avengers (TV) crossover, in which Frank Marker meets two eccentrics in search of champagne in a dark alleyway. And also Dark Towers fic! (I can't explain again. Click on the Look and Read tag on this entry if you're feeling brave and possibly ready to pause and read things slowly at need.)

Doctor Who was not forgotten, either, as I had a great drabble from [personal profile] john_amend_all, and a lovely ficlet from [personal profile] cosmic_llin, both of which featured Tegan.

Not actually in my stocking, but tucked away on AO3, I had two excellent Heyer drabbles from [profile] desert_vixen (Excitement and Notes. The first is my favourite, I have to admit, because it's beautifully evil.)

I also wrote some things, and made some icons, but I shall have to find them all again and make another post, I think. I should say that I was very tired and ended up with this Desperate Drabbling plan, in which I wrote down all the characters/pairings from requests I might be able to do and randomly generated poetry prompts, matched them up and attempted a drabble until I ran out of steam. Also some icons. But it did end up a bit random as to who actually got things and who didn't. Still, it was better than nobody getting anything. (Well, unless it wasn't, but let's hope otherwise!)

Anyway, I loved everything, so thanks to everyone who was kind enough to stuff things in my stocking: ♥ ♥ ♥

Title: Castle in the Clouds
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 757
Characters/Pairings: Ruth Evershed/Harry Pearce
Notes/Warnings: AU. (Very. People are happy.) No spoilers.
Summary: This once, Harry and Ruth get their happy ending.

For [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 in the 500 Prompts Meme - #138 cabin by the sea & Ruth/Harry. (Where “cabin by the sea” = a second hand bookshop in Devon, courtesy of Peter Firth, even if he unaccountably said “tea-shop” instead of “bookshop”.) I also hope this makes up for the other time you asked me for Ruth/Harry and I wrote ruthlessly Ruth-less fic in response.

The full set of icons made for [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo (minus only the icons that were made as specific requests, and the Big Finish ones, which will follow shortly). I had nothing particular lined up for today's 'naart', so took up the (probably not-at-all-serious) requests/suggestions my flisters helpfully made for things that should have sparkly icons. (And don't worry; I do realise that none of the suggestions was made in an 'I want to use that icon' sense!)

For [livejournal.com profile] pitry, who thought Spike should be sparkly (under a cut for mild language - it is Spike we're talking about here:
Ironic Sparkly Spike )

For [livejournal.com profile] belantana, who wanted Sparkly Spooks. (And I'm sorry; I was tired when I made these and it shows, but they were a joke really!) I only have caps from 2.05 (and some somewhere from 2.06), but sparkly action! spooks, happy sparkly spooks, and sparkly Ruth:

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

And [livejournal.com profile] justice_turtle's suggestion (not particularly sparkle-related, but I put some in anyway) that I do a Silver icon with a Star Trek quote about Q. (And I am just sorry that as it turned out, I had no suitable cap of him with that tambourine to make it funnier!):

Photobucket

And, actually, barring maybe doing some more textures, I'm not sure what to do for the remaining 9 or so days - does anyone have any more suggestions/requests? (I know I'm hardly the world's best icon-maker, but even so, any ideas/requests, or provide me with a cap and I'll see if I can fit it into the remainder of [livejournal.com profile] naarmamo. Or just give me a fandom/character and a prompt/quote to challenge me.

It has taken me 22 days to run out of ideas, but I think I just about have, so I'd actually be grateful. Shoot - no guarantees I'll make the icon, or that you'll like it, but I'll try my best!
lost_spook: (Ruth smiling)
Okay, snippet from the latest Spooks write-up from Alison Graham. (I cut only for any sensitive flowers who can't even bear to read the 'blurb' about the next episode 9.04, as I am related to one or two.)

An Analyst at the Chalet School? )

Ruth At the Chalet School, anyone? Oh, my. My head goes to crossover-land very easily, as everyone will know by now, but even so... She'd like it there. Except when she felt the need to be evil, as she does occasionally. (Probably the only other person on my flist who will get the wonder will be [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42, but I couldn't keep it to myself.)

And [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 will no doubt approve of her proper verdict of Mary from Downton Abbey as "the toxic Lady Mary..." Heh, again.
lost_spook: (Ruth!)
Day 21 - Favorite ship

I've tried being a bit unpredictable - now let's be 100% predictable here: Spooks - Ruth/Harry. So much flustering, subtext, confusion, amusement and genuine emotion at various points through the seasons. And the thing is, it was all Peter Firth's fault. Everyone laughed at him, and now it's an epic ship on the show and over the intrawebs with fic and postcards and comms and who knows what. A tribute to the achievement of one (or two?) actors getting carried away with their roles...

Have a Harry/Ruth fanvid and join the voyage...
lost_spook: (Ruth smiling)
Only 1 day behind now! Yay.

Day 15 - Favorite female character:

So many to choose from, but there's only one who's definitely in the top spot here: Ruth Evershed, Spooks's Senior Analyst, as played by Nicola Walker.

More, and other candidates under the cut )
lost_spook: (Avon no sense)
One of those things that definitely wasn't what I was supposed to be doing with my afternoon off. But [livejournal.com profile] emerald_happy's suggestion of a Ros-Avon snark fest began to take shape in my head. Two disclaimers: 1. I apologise that there isn't anything like enough snark. 2. There really ought to be a very dark version of this somewhere. (I'll think about it).

Story: A Comedy of Errors
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: PG
Word Count: 3,130
Characters/Pairings: Ros Myers, Kerr Avon, Ruth Evershed, Vila Restal, Zafar Younis, Harry Pearce, Malcolm Wynn-Jones, Dayna Mellanby, Del Tarrant, Adam Carter, Jo Portman.
Warnings: No real spoilers for either show. (Set just before 5.5 for Spooks, somewhere in S3 for B7.)

Summary: In which Section D apprehend a group of apparent terrorists in the act, only to find there’s something strange about them. This could all be smoothed over if Ros hadn’t entered a battle of wills with their leader. (A Very Silly Spooks/B7 crossover, with Avon and Ros snark, and everyone else having a nice day out in London. Ruth’s continuing acceptance of all things strange and alien, is still me running on from my fic Anarchist Sprites, but it always seems in character somehow.) Most of this, as I said, is entirely [livejournal.com profile] emerald_happy's fault.

Torture and ice cream )

Written after a discussion on the back of [livejournal.com profile] boro_girl's entry in the [livejournal.com profile] who_like_giants ficathon (See HERE) in which she suggested Clyde working for MI5.

Therefore this is hastily written nonsense, but hopefully will amuse.

Story: Work Experience
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All ages
Word Count: 1429
Characters/Pairings: Clyde Langer, Ruth Evershed, Harry Pearce, Lucas North, Ros Myers, Tariq
Warnings: None, except for flippancy inappropriate to S8 Spooks.

Summary: Spooks/Sarah Jane Adventures. Clyde Langer manages to wangle work experience in Thames House, Section D.

Clyde on the Grid )
lost_spook: (spooks - Harry/Ruth/Bench = ♥)
I printed the other fic off and the problem became instantly obvious and fixable. So: Harry, Ruth, late night on the Grid, towards the end of S4. (All ages, 533 words, no spoilers)

It's still not very good, but happy birthday again, nonetheless! (And I finally managed to write Harry/Ruth!)

After the end of the day )
lost_spook: (Ruth!)
I has Ruth icon! It struck me that if I used the icons/graphics tags on [livejournal.com profile] spooky_doings I would be bound to find some. Oh, the pain of not being able to use all of them at once. *coughs*

But, bonus, I found a malcolm vid! A Malcolm vid to Inspector Gadget.

Yes, as you can, see, I am so unexcited about this it's unreal.

Look, Spooks is the only show I love almost as much as Doctor Who. And DW just isn't this sarky and there's no Ruth. I admit, there's the Doctor and other wonderful people, but this Ruth-lessness is a downside to anything. Well, technically Spooks is Ruth-less, too, but, oh, once it wasn't.
lost_spook: (smallbrain)
For [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 , although I've no idea if she wants them or not! (But I just realised I won't be spoiling you one little bit now.)

Favourite spooks fanvids under here )
lost_spook: (smallbrain)
I know, this is getting boring. But I never saw a Ruth fanvid that wasn't thoroughly spoilery until today.

This is lovely: so Ruth (and pretty safe for the uninitiated to watch, methinks).

It's by CutandRunAway and called Momentum

Edit Talking of Ruth; [livejournal.com profile] bugiarda has just written a lovely Ruth meets Nine vignette Differences of the Body. (And now I just want more! Oh, over to me, did you say...?
lost_spook: (spooks - tom quinn)
I got so Spooks-nostalgic over my other post, I had to go and watch my favourite episode (2.05) and I'm going to ramble about why I love it, because spoilers for this episode are slightly different to any other ep. I lent S2 to my youngest sister and she returned it with a thank you very much and 'I liked all of it, except that really silly episode...' Yes. And I can see why, but she's so, so wrong. ;-)

2.05 was written by Howard Brenton - Section D know they're going to take part in an EERIE exercise (MI5's Really Dramatic version of a fire drill) and this seems to be it - or is it all true?

The end of the world has never been this much fun... )
