I am very tired from the hospital visit (plus parents) yesterday, as it was in the afternoon. Afternoons are resting time, not doing excessively tiring things time. So I will catch up sometime soon when I am able. In the meantime, I am getting by through rewatching The Shadow of the Tower again. This inevitably led to me having a go a giffing the cute but very probably anachronistic monkey, so I am sharing that with you now, because the internet can obviously never have enough cute animals:

Dear Yuletide Writer,

You share a tiny fandom with me, so that makes you a person of taste and awesomeness as far as I'm concerned and I hope that you have fun writing for me.

I am a great believer in the story that you want to tell being the one that's going to be the most compelling to read, so please, write that story. If you are the sort of person who likes a concise letter and a free hand, just go for what you have in mind. The extra details are for souls like me who want them. Do not attempt to give me everything below in one fic; you'd do yourself an injury. If anything seems contradictory, it's mostly because I like all sorts of different things at different times in different fandoms.

My Yuletide letter is finally in a better state and only needing some very minor tweaks. Hurrah! And just in time - sign-ups are now open!

This week I managed two more crossover ficlets for the Crossover Meme (I am aiming to get them all done by the time Yuletide assignments go out; if not, I shall have to write them off):

Well, Reveals have happened, and I'm now free to talk about what I wrote. My assignment, fairly amusingly and not very surprisingly, was for [livejournal.com profile] liadtbunny, who had requested various lovely things, including Adam Adamant Lives!. And you'll remember that this time last year I was all aglow with just having discovered the series and what a joy it was, and now I've wound up all aglow again with having reminded myself just what a joy it is. If you're a Classic Who/Avengers etc. fan you should head off to watch it now.

Cut for some talk about the writing )

Anyway, enough of the waffling, here's the fic:

The Maze of Terror (7274 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Adam Adamant Lives!
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Adam Adamant & Georgina Jones & William E. Simms
Characters: Adam Llewellyn De Vere Adamant, Georgina Jones, William E. Simms, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Yuletide, Hijinks & Shenanigans, Case Fic, Humor, 1960s
Summary: Georgie’s received the invitation of a lifetime, Simms is starstruck, and Adam is on the trail of an unspeakable villain who’s terrifying people to death – literally!

Also I wrote two treats, in The Moonstone and The Reluctant Widow )

And thanks to Liadt, who wrote my Madness SotT/Ten Stupidest Things fic, How Now Brown Monkey! (I knew it was you! In fact, I strongly suspected it was you when I saw someone had posted SotT in the first place. You're a star! ♥) And my gift proper was written by DeCarabas, whom I don't know and maybe doesn't LJ, but oh my, they so made my Yuletide with that wonderful piece. (I'm feeling guilty enough about requesting a super-super-obscure and uncool fandom and making someone write in it; I'm now also eyeing the other two comments on it, because it kind of looks as if they haven't actually got what's going on. I said it was subtle; I didn't think it was that subtle, but maybe it was to someone who doesn't know all the stuff I wrote in my letter? (Or maybe it was just the other aspect they chose to comment on??) DeCarabas got so much of that in, really quietly and non-crackily, it was awesome. (But, okay, what Dr Seward thinks he is doing is not necessarily what he is doing/what's really happening. It's brilliant. I love it to pieces. Usefully ambiguous headcanon totally accepted. ♥)

Bookmarks and Garlic Flowers (1061 words) by DeCarabas
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dracula (TV 1968), Dracula & Related Fandoms
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mina Harker/Lucy Weston/John Seward
Characters: John Seward, Mina Harker, Lucy Weston
Additional Tags: Post-Canon
Summary: On rational explanations.

I guessed two of Liadt's fics, and one of Paranoidangel's, and otherwise, I was as clueless as ever, but it was fun. Here's to the last of the reccing and commenting - and to the New Year's Resolution Collection 2016! (I am resolved to write one this year; last year I didn't and I wished I had.)

1. I have been watching all the usual challenges go up over at [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, waiting for Some Day My Fic Will Come, because this year my Enemy at the Door request would qualify, but alas, Some Day My Fic Will Come has not come and my faithfulness will only be rewarded if some day my fic does come without the help of Some Day My Fic Will Come.

2. In other Yuletide-related silliness, last time I made my Shadow of the Tower request, I went on about the DIY map-making in the show, but I decided to be sensible and leave it at pantomime lions and cardboard spaceships this year. However, I did make a small gif-set on Tumblr and I'm not the only one who was amused by it, most especially Henry's epic food battle map in ep9. (I think there's another instance, but I can't remember.) I don't know why it happens; probably just because the director is Prudence Fitzgerald aka the director who is fine with showing the studio floor, the studio backdrop, having random CSO, super-close-close-ups of James Maxwell and David Collings and probably other people, vaseline on the lens, people talking to camera and whatever else she feels like. (Also, btw, SotT is remarkable because for some reason in 1972 at the BBC, 10 out of the 13 eps were directed by women. It also had a female script editor, a female historical researcher and 1 female writer (2 eps). I don't know why or how, but it's a thing. As is Tudor DIY-map-making.

3. In not entirely unrelated news, I am actually writing up the story where Ace goes on a 'date' with Henry VII that came from this meme. Sadly, though, I am not yet writing the one where Twelve and Cora Mills are buddy cops, nor am I writing the one where Twelve and Henry VII have to run a coffee shop together. Those are still free to a good home if anyone wants to win the internet.

4. And now I had better go, or my mushroom soup I'm making will pay the price for me talking about 1970s telly (again).

I've been a little quiet this week, because my friend was up visiting for two days, which was lovely (she is also the only person I know in rl who thinks watching creaky old cult TV is fun. O, guess what we did?), but then I was extremely tired after. I'm feeling a bit better now & decided that it might be a good moment to have another go at podficcing (because I'd already got myself used to speaking more earlier in the week and recovered from it, so...).

(I have complicated feelings about podfic, which mostly wind up at NOPE. However, I used to read aloud as part of my rl job & also had to think about making stuff accessible in as many formats as possible, and am rather worried about how silent I am for most of the time these days & how much it takes out of me when I do talk for very long, so carefully monitored speaking for x length and gradually building up via fic-reading seems like a useful plan. I just have to deal with all the other NOPES but we'll get there!)

Anyway, I started with this. The podfic is very basic & probably enough to make practised podficcers shudder, but I think it is at least fully audible and that was my chief aim. But I don't think people will be queuing up to listen to obscure ficlets in podfic-form anyway! (Er. I hope!)

30 icons made for the [community profile] hc_bingo square "hugs". I went back through all my screen caps looking for any iconable & expressive hugs and this was the result. Given the odd things I screen cap, it's a little motley, but on the other hand it covers a whole range of hugs from 1959-2013, which is quite nice in itself, after all. (Even if I may have used a pic to icon before, these are all new for the challenge.)

I have been a bit AWOL, but for reasons and also now I have a vid! And, all right, so it is a vid of James Maxwell, BUT it is totally a vid containing cute children and animals, paper aeroplanes, stuffed toys, random barometers, wilful destruction of property, Emma Peel kicking ass, vampires, tea and coffee drinking, two Henry VIIs, rocks, Nazis, space ships, and an actual kitchen sink. Also epic hand-holding (but not anything like as much as there could have been).

Cut for Embed )

And, at some point, I will catch up with other stuff a bit. (♥)
lost_spook: (s&s - ot3)
Well, it did go live, and even though I think it may have been quieter than some years, I got rather a lot of nice things in my stocking!

[personal profile] liadtbunny wrote me Public Eye fic, If I had a Million Pounds and posted a small picspam of James Maxwell from a thing called The Prison. (It looks like a great source for if I wanted Copper-related pics of him.) I also had a picspam from [personal profile] dunderklumpen, who went to all the trouble of finding pics of my random favourite old TV actors for me here.

Clocket made me a brilliant bit of art of Frank Marker; [personal profile] finisterre made me some old TV icons & [personal profile] rosied found me a link to a huge list of genealogy blogs, so I should be able to find something interesting in there.

Also there was more fic! It's been a bumper holiday season for Sapphire & Steel, that's for certain.

I had The Bright Side of Time (Silver, Sapphire, the TARDIS, Clara & Twelve) by [personal profile] kaffyr, Something Hungry Under the Stone (Silver) by [personal profile] annariel, and Just Passing Through (Silver/Liz) by [personal profile] john_amend_all.

Thank you, everyone! ♥

I did manage to write three little ficlets, as follows under the cut, but I'm sorry I couldn't do more!

1. LJ, whatever that stupid bar thing is at the bottom of my page, make it go away now, or I'll be off myself. Aargh. (It's the small things, sorry. I don't want it; it annoys me, and I've got my browser lower so that at the moment it's hidden behind the desktop toolbar thingy, but I'd rather make it go away.) The good thing about LJ is that someone's bound to come up with a way to do that pretty quickly, at least. *sigh* LJ, you'd been doing so well lately, too.) ETA: Yay, someone knows a way to turn it off. (Go to Profile: Settings: Extensions & untick the LJ Times box. Hurrah! Thanks, a_phoenixdragaon!)

2. Yuletide assignments are out, and the period of secrecy begins. I'm pleased with my assignment, but also very amused, for reasons. I hope everyone else is okay with theirs, too? Good luck! See you at reveals...

3. I went to the doctor's this morning, so was a bit weird but happily (unhappily?), I was at the last ep of SotT and therefore could come home, watch it, and cry in the good way. Very helpful. Thanks, 1970s BBC. (I can always rely on them to make me cry these days.)

(I also yesterday finally watched the extra on the DVD - a 50 min drama from 1969 called "The Tower: The Innocent", from which SotT was eventually extended. It has different actors - except for James Maxwell. Which is weird. He's Henry VII, but not the SotT Henry VII, just, well, a rather stern king. I was writing a whole post making comparisons and then realised that nobody else has seen either of them except maybe Liadt and I should either not or at least wait till I had pictures.)

4. Talking of which, have a vidlet I made two years ago for a Hallowe'en [community profile] fan_flashworks challenge, since it's Hallowe'en and I've just been appropriately rewatching this very episode. (Death masks, people! Death masks. Creepy. *nods*) (It's even more appropriate when you factor in the James Maxwell ghost story. ;-p Though, it's possible I was just being shippy and gloomy at the time, but what the hell.)

(I don't really do Hallowe'en, but I like some spooky things. ♥)
lost_spook: (s&s - silver)
So I decided it would be better to make icons for the BBC's old 1972 serial about Henry VII, Shadow of the Tower than to babble about it. And then I had too much fun, as you can see, with eps 1-5 (& hopefully I'll do the rest in a second post).

I should apparently never make rash promises about not posting any more gifs, because [personal profile] akashasheiress was sad there were no gifs in my last post of James Maxwell as Henry VII. Which was, in my defence, because there were none in existence as far as I know, so I have hastily made some now and here they are:

Or: I am all excited!

Somebody has put all of Shadow of the Tower up on YouTube! (I know, copyright etc., but I had to buy a Dutch edition, because there's no UK version, thanks 2Entertain for that. There is a Region 1 version). Also, because unlike some things also up there (the amazing Elizabeth R which everybody should watch unless they really hate old TV and Duchess of Duke Street, which features another 1970s actress being awesome all the way through. Glenda Jackson and Gemma Jones, both so amazing in different ways. ♥) Shadow of the Tower isn't something I could honestly recommend anyone buy. Because I think I liked it because I'm me. Other people probably wouldn't.

But, eeee, okay, if you want to see the only film/tv dramatisation of the life of Henry VII, a much-overlooked period of history, understand why I suddenly had a thing for James Maxwell (well, you may just wonder at my strangeness) and why the last episode went and made me ship Henry VII/Elizabeth of York (damn you 1970s BBC, how could you do that to me?) or, as some people on my flist who aren't me (honestly) would appreciate, you want to see David Collings be yet another deluded Tudor traitor who gets tortured in the Tower (it happened to him in Elizabeth R as well), here it is!

So, before someone takes them away:

1. Crown in Jeopardy & you can find the rest easily from here, or select from the user's uploads.

However, it's done in what really amounts to 13x 50 min one-act plays, so, here are some recs for individual eps:

3&4 (the Schooling of Apes/The Crowning of Apes are the two with David Collings in, but are also generally v good, covering Lambert Simnel and Lincoln's betrayal).
5. The Serpent and the Comforter. This was a really weird episode and I'm not quite sure they pulled it off, but I liked how they experimented and didn't just do a straight-forward BBC historical, so this one has Peter Jeffrey as a non-conformist about to be burned at the stake in a sort of battle with Henry for his soul. It's done as a morality play (everyone is just "The Prisoner", "The Guard" and "The King").
6. The White Hart (this one is Stanley's downfall, and one of the best episodes. Also the one where Margaret Beaufort tells Henry off because he can't go round executing all his in-laws. Ha.)
9. Do The Sheep Sin? (Perkin Warbeck/The Cornish Uprising. Cue shades of grey everywhere.)
11. The Strange Shapes of Reality. Another experimental one (although in this case, this means CSO everywhere; this is Not Good, although if you can see past that it's pretty clever). But if you didn't believe me about the 1972 gay kissing at the BBC, you can watch it here. I tell you the truth, honest.
13. The King Without A Face. (And then the BBC broke my heart and stamped on it. Thanks, BBC. It was a good episode, though. 12 is as well, but I'm getting to the point where I'm listing them all.)

Also, 7 & 8 are the really duff episoes, but 7 A Fly in the Ointment is the one where Peter Bowles is a Tudor spy-cum-assassin. It is a duff episode, though. Not enough Henry and I'm sure there's a whole scene where the guest cast are fighting hysteria. (I can't think of any other explanation for it).

You'll probably think I'm mad. You've all been watching shiny, pretty new TV that moves faster than the speed of mud. It spoils you for proper appreciation of stuff. ;-)

I should do a proper and sensible review of all my old TV watching at some point, instead of just flailing wildly and misleadingly about stuff, because there is a difference between things I liked for reasons and things that are really good and worth putting up with old TV limitations for. However, today I'm just flailing again, sorry. For some reason, I loved this one. Really, really, but I've no idea why.

Although not for everyone ([personal profile] justice_turtle, you would probably not be able to cope with all the 1970s/Tudor Bad Hair and Bad Wigs, sorry ;-p).
lost_spook: (shadow - elizabeth/henry)
I made a proper fanvid for Shadow of the Tower (with thanks to [livejournal.com profile] akashasheiress who - accidentally - gave me the song and made it possible).

YouTube link in case embedding fails.
Henry/Elizabeth of York and the endless conspiracies and mistrust and the fragility of this new dynasty. (Some shots of, erm, rather fake death/blood and executions. Also death masks again. But not morbid like the vidlets.)

Lyrics under the cut )

And I know, one day I'll do a fanvid that isn't really odd and obscure again.

I made two things for [livejournal.com profile] fan_flashworks last challenge (Ghosts & Gore). Now it's over and I can post here, this is the first (well, actually, it was the second, but never mind):

Title: Company of Shadows
Fandom: The Shadow of the Tower
Song: Father's Day - Murray Gold (DW soundtrack)
Rating: PG (for the morbid theme)
Length: 1.55 mins
Content notes: Death masks (in case anyone else also finds them creepy) and general morbidity.
Vidder notes: From the 1972 BBC drama The Shadow of the Tower. Spoilers only for actual history.
Summary: Henry and Elizabeth, turning into mere memories and ghosts - and death masks.

Company of Shadows )

I had the idea for this and tried out five different short pieces of music for it and rather liked the result of one of the other ones and the way it immediately made it a different vid (that picked up another underlying theme of the last episode) so went back to it after and tweaked it a bit. So here's an additional/alternative version, less creepy (I hope) but sadder (and shorter). But I don't really expect anyone to watch either, let alone both. I was mainly playing about with some things I haven't tried in my vidding software (which is part of the spirit of this particular comm, anyway).

Melancholy Interlude )

(Sometimes I am terribly morbid, sorry. It just seemed to fit the challenge.)
