(I was going to do [community profile] fandom_stocking things at last, but I was feeling too rotten, so I pulled this out of my hidden posts in progress instead. I don't think anyone's getting stocking stuffers from me at this rate...)

Last year's results are here

Cut for considerable length )
lost_spook: (I Capture - writing)
And so my treats. I wrote the first for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, chiefly in a hopeless attempt to remain anonymous, so that she might at least wonder which one was me. (I had vague plans for a rather different one, but I got seized by this idea while reading through her likes in the letter):

Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Implied/Referenced Mind Control, Dark
Summary: Some personalities are magnetic, they exert an irresistible pull on others.

Then there were two prompts in particular that jumped out at me this year, the first being Wasuremono's great prompt about Miss Marple being a goddess, the genius loci of St Mary Mead, which I obviously had to write:

The Spirit of St Mary Mead (4005 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jane Marple, Griselda Clement, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Historical, Multi-Era, Roman Britain, English Civil War, 18th Century, 20th Century, 21st Century, Misses Clause Challenge, Miss Marple is a Goddess
Summary: St Mary Mead has had an unusual guardian down through all these centuries.

The second was for moemachina, about Feste & Olivia from Twelfth Night. As I've loved Feste since I did the play for A-Levels mumble years ago, I couldn't resist. I had an idea, but then remembered that writing Shakespeare fic is TERRIFYING. So I watched BBC TN twice in a row, found some 16th C jokes and riddles on the internet, built my fic around those and then went for it. And then typed it up while mentally going LALALA not writing Shakespeare etc. Happily, it seems to have got some really lovely comments, so I clearly didn't mess it up too badly.

Summary: ”Look you now, he’s out of his guard already; unless you laugh and minister occasion to him, he is gagged.”

That done, I decided to write a couple of treats for Madness if I could, but the Adam Adamant Lives! fic for Liadt grew large enough for the main collection, even if it was probably too frivolous for Yuletide (and I don't think Liadt was fooled by my anonymity for a minute, either):

Battered and Bruised (1812 words) by lost_spook

Characters: Adam Adamant, Georgina Jones, William E. Simms
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Cake Fic Meme, Cake, Humor, Hijinks & Shenanigans, I was going to label this crack, and then thought soberly about canon, and didn't
Summary: Mr Adamant suffers a truly traumatic incident at a village gala. Unfortunately for him, Georgie is on hand to help...

And lastly, this tiny bit of post-canon for Gerry and Sandra from New Tricks, for Dynapink:

Vintage (532 words) by lost_spook

With many thanks to Pers who patiently beta-ed all three full treats and a second beta of my long assignment! (Those who have been around these parts a while: I think you can probably already guess which one got the influential rec. Oh, yes. It is my fate, my doom, my only claim to fame.)
lost_spook: (b7 - deva)
I wrote several things this year but my actual assignment was for [personal profile] calliopes_pen in Dracula (TV 1968):

The Poison Tree (27258 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 7/7
Fandom: Dracula (TV 1968)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Jonathan Harker/Mina Harker, Count Dracula/Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker & John Seward, Jonathan Harker & John Seward, Jonathan Harker/Original Male Character(s)
Characters: Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, John Seward, Mrs Weston, Mrs Perkins (Dracula TV 1968), Mrs Hoskins (Dracula TV 1968), Original Characters
Additional Tags: References to Mina Harker/Lucy Weston, Vampires, Hypnotism, Post-Canon, World War I, Victorian, Edwardian Period, Blood, Yuletide, Dark, Religious Imagery & Symbolism
Summary: Dracula may have been defeated, but the future has never been less certain for Jonathan and Mina. Everything has changed, most especially the Harkers themselves…

I both enjoyed writing this a lot (despite surface dissimilarities, we clearly overlap on a lot of tropes and things, which made it particularly fun to do) and worried about it far too much! Par for the course for Yuletide, really, I suppose. The adaptation has a rather open, ambiguous ending (Mina is still showing vampiric influence, while we don't even know what sort of state Jonathan is left in), so it was really interesting to try and write one possibility of what might happen next. I planned it to be somewhere around 8,000-12,000 words - and then it more than doubled in size, taking me way outside my current comfort zone in what I can do without making myself ill. I regret nothing, though. Except that it doesn't have even more stuff calliopes_pen likes in it.

Some ramblings about writing it )

And some rambling thoughts on reading Dracula for it )

And I'll have to go and rest now, so I'll post the treats in another post later.

* The upshot of this is that now I want fic about the housekeepers. The housekeepers are great, even if it took me ages to get their actual names straight! Mrs Hopkins is not fazed by anything! (She works in an asylum; fair enough) and Mrs Perkins bosses Mrs Weston about all the time. And they're both tiny and fierce! (O, Network, when will you run to subtitles on your releases?)

** I have to say, The Woman in White must surely have been an influence - asylums, wicked counts, Laura and Marian and Lucy and Mina, mesmerism etc. even in addition to the Collins-esque epistolary/evidence-gathering format.
lost_spook: (Northanger reading)
I didn't have as much chance to read the Collection while away this year, but it is just as full of lovely things as ever, and you can find it all here. Dive in!

However, I did manage to read some short things, so here they are, just nipping in before reveals - my two wonderful gifts, plus a rather random selection of my first pick at the chocolate box, as it were, chosen in exactly that sort of manner! I hope to have a more leisurely go-through in the coming week or two, though.

16 recs in Archer's Goon, Blandings, Discworld, Dracula (TV 1968), Dungeons & Dragons (Cartoon), Fire & Hemlock, Flood (2007), Georgette Heyer, Malory Towers, New Tricks, Red Dwarf, While You Were Sleeping & Yes Minister )

Yuletide!

25/12/2016 07:21 pm
lost_spook: light + Ruth Evershed looking upwards (spooks - Ruth!)
You know how when people joke about having unreasonable expectations for Yuletide: "All I want is a novel length fic for my super-obscure fandom featuring all my favourite things. Oh, and a unicorn pony."

Well, I don't know how it happened, but this year that is exactly what I have:

Wrap The Cloak Of Night Around His Shoulders (58042 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dracula (TV 1968)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Mina Harker/John Seward, Count Dracula/Jonathan Harker
Characters: John Seward, Mina Harker, Jonathan Harker, Lucy Weston, Count Dracula, Abraham Van Helsing
Additional Tags: When Vampires Attack, Exorcisms, Hypnotism, Possession, Bats, Temptation, Friendship, Mind Control, Jonathan runs away with Dracula, Van Helsing is clever, Mina protects Lucy, Seward needs a blood transfusion and blanket right about now, There's something in the basement, Vampire Bites, Hurt/Comfort, Character Turned Into Vampire, Elements of Lucy/Mina, staking, Vampirism Causes Irreconcilable Differences, Suspense, Nightmares, Fog, Journey to the Castle, Happy Ending, Blood Drinking, Adventure, Alternate Universe
Summary: What if Seward and Van Helsing told Mina about the danger Lucy was in sooner? What if Lucy wasn’t bitten a final time that night, because Mina was in the house? This gives them a reprieve. Everything changes for the better and for the worse. Each takes a more active role in their fate as they fight to keep Dracula away from Lucy, and the darkness closes in around them.

It looks AMAZING. I have read the start, but for various reasons the full thing may have to wait until I am home again (SORRY, dear author). AMAZING. I am pining at waiting to read it, but also kind of wanting to make it last forever, because you can't count on practically getting a novel for Yuletide even once in a lifetime, let alone twice. And I am fairly confident from those tags that Dr Seward is going to faint again. What more could I ask for?

Oh, and a pony unicorn:

Lost Souls (6455 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: New Tricks
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Relationships: Jack Halford & Sandra Pullman, Gerry Standing/Robert Strickland (implied)
Characters: Jack Halford, Sandra Pullman, Brian Lane, Gerry Standing, Robert Strickland
Additional Tags: Case Fic, Murder Mystery, Historical Murder Mystery, Father-Daughter Relationship, Yuletide, Yuletide Treat
Summary: An anonymous tip-off leads to the discovery of a body. A young woman hangs her hopes on a mysterious charity. And Sandra and Jack experience revelations of their own as they attempt to discover the truth.

Will the Lost Souls find some peace with the UCOS team on the case?

This is actual case fic for New Tricks, reads just like a missing episode, only stuffed with nearly all the things I asked for in that section of my letter! (And I have read this and it's fab.)

If my authors are around, then THANK YOU both for making my Yuletide and then some! <3 I hope everyone else is having a nice time, whether celebrating, Yuletiding or not! (I am. V tired from some cute wee people currently!)

Also, should anyone wish to try and guess my Yuletide fics: I have five fics in the main collection and a ficlet in Madness. Five of them are in fandoms I have written before, one of them is fairly long, and one of them is in a fandom I have never written before. Should anyone guess, I am sure I can manage an icon or put you to the top of the queue for a long lost 500 Prompts fic or something! (Some of them do not feel very anonymous to me!)

ETA: I'm still not here, though...

Things

lost_spook: (dw - amy)
1. Since I was hopping up and down impatiently last time I posted: I got to post at least one Yuletide treat on Saturday, and that made me feel a bit better and more accomplished, and in the meantime not only has a gift magically arrived (and shaking it produces most intriguing results!) but a treat for me as well! And then I posted my other treats and now all that's left is the last minute checking over of the assignment. I'm looking forward to it!

2. Multifandom Friending Meme! I would use the banner, but it's truly freaky, to the point where I would have to call Sapphire and Steel in if I posted it here, so I won't. I gave it a whirl anyway. You never know!

3. I'm fairly sure when I started writing this I had a third thing, but now I don't. Please imagine I said something witty instead. I hope you are all doing well.
lost_spook: (dw - one)
1. I am now an impatient Yuletider, waiting to have a present to shake! (Where O where is my fic; it's not as if the Deadline is yet to come and I'm being unreasonable! Oh, wait, yes I am...) I am also waiting for two other people to have gifts to I can post their treats. (Which technically I can do anyway, one way or the other, but I'll wait at least a bit longer now. And one of them is not yet typed up and may not work anyway - scary fandom is scary! But shiny prompt is shiny, so shiny...)

2. I was thinking about [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts a while ago and wondering, for various reasons, about opening it up to be just table-claiming and not claiming for a specific person/pairing/era, and then I thought that it has tiny prompt tables (3-20 prompts depending) and so that's part of the point. But then I thought about adding in an extra option to liven things up and so now you can claim a theme instead if you wish! (So, say "historicals" or "Villains" or a trope you like or "Crossovers" or "Episode Tags" or "Favourite Pairings"). I am ridiculously pleased with this idea and now want to claim a further table. I think one could go well with my [community profile] genprompt_bingo table! I'm amused at myself; I've finally worked out how to make my own comm more exciting to me. Anyway, I made a post at the comm for that and a couple of other things.

It's been a while since I've mentioned it, so *pimps at the worst time of the year* : [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts is a low-pressure mini-prompt table community for Doctor Who (of all flavours, including spin-offs). All fanworks are welcome as fills and minimums are pretty minimal! Tables come in sets of 3,6,9,12,15 & 20; you can sign up for up to two claims at a time and you can claim any Character, Pairing, Era, Spin-Off, or Theme that you wish. There are no actual deadlines, but if your first fanwork doesn't appear within three months of signing up, your claim will be removed from the list as inactive, but you can always renew it or pick it up again at any time. People can also suggest new prompt tables if they have ideas. Once you complete your claim, you get a banner of variable quality as made by me (except if you are me, because I draw the line at making myself banners). All the details are here if you want to know more.

3. I have a [community profile] fandom_stocking hung up here, should anyone be interested. (Sign-ups are now over and the stockings are gradually being hung up. I am bookmarking stockings and vaguely hoping that I'll be able to make at least the odd icon here and there, post-Yuletide writing, post-being away etc. etc. and dreaming of ficlets. Who knows?)
lost_spook: (b7 - deva)
Dear Yuletide Writer,

You share a tiny fandom with me, so that makes you a person of taste and awesomeness as far as I'm concerned and I hope that you have fun writing for me.

I am a great believer in the story that you want to tell being the one that's going to be the most compelling to read, so please, write that story. If you are the sort of person who likes a concise letter and a free hand, just go for what you have in mind. The extra details are for souls like me who want them. Do not attempt to give me everything below in one fic; you'd do yourself an injury. If anything seems contradictory, it's mostly because I like all sorts of different things at different times in different fandoms.

Annual long flaily letter continues under here )

My Yuletide letter is finally in a better state and only needing some very minor tweaks. Hurrah! And just in time - sign-ups are now open!

This week I managed two more crossover ficlets for the Crossover Meme (I am aiming to get them all done by the time Yuletide assignments go out; if not, I shall have to write them off):

1. The same someone who left nice comments on my S&S fic a couple of weeks ago, has now also done some lovely fanart of Snow White, Blood Red over on their Deviant Art. Nobody's ever tried to illustrate my fics before, so I am all aflail at this & so pleased that she liked it that much. (I liked that one, too.)

2. It seems to be Yuletide already, oh noes... Trying to narrow down nominations is always the difficult bit. Do I want this hopelessly obscure British TV show or that one? How do I secretly manage to persuade someone to write James Maxwell fic for me? (I know, I can't, but people have twice now. It has unduly encouraged me.) Will anyone else nom the things I hope they will? Or in short, here we go again in the lead up to what is always my very favourite fandom event of the year. \o/

3. I still have an unfinished Fandom Stocking/NYR WIP. Whoops. Maybe if I can stop doing family history now and get my spoons back? MAYBE.

4. Other important things I have forgotten. Sorry. Also not yet much commenting, sorry. Soon. (It takes a while to get back to properly functioning levels if I do stuff like the Newspaper Archive searching. But I need to post).

WIP Meme

I saw a WIP Meme go by. It was slightly different as ever, but the rules keep changing: I just stick to posting random lines from all the current WIPs I'm willing to admit to/might some day get finished...

Both slightly more and less than I thought )
lost_spook: (Default)
Well, Reveals have happened, and I'm now free to talk about what I wrote. My assignment, fairly amusingly and not very surprisingly, was for [livejournal.com profile] liadtbunny, who had requested various lovely things, including Adam Adamant Lives!. And you'll remember that this time last year I was all aglow with just having discovered the series and what a joy it was, and now I've wound up all aglow again with having reminded myself just what a joy it is. If you're a Classic Who/Avengers etc. fan you should head off to watch it now.

Cut for some talk about the writing )

Anyway, enough of the waffling, here's the fic:

The Maze of Terror (7274 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Adam Adamant Lives!
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Adam Adamant & Georgina Jones & William E. Simms
Characters: Adam Llewellyn De Vere Adamant, Georgina Jones, William E. Simms, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Yuletide, Hijinks & Shenanigans, Case Fic, Humor, 1960s
Summary: Georgie’s received the invitation of a lifetime, Simms is starstruck, and Adam is on the trail of an unspeakable villain who’s terrifying people to death – literally!

Also I wrote two treats, in The Moonstone and The Reluctant Widow )

And thanks to Liadt, who wrote my Madness SotT/Ten Stupidest Things fic, How Now Brown Monkey! (I knew it was you! In fact, I strongly suspected it was you when I saw someone had posted SotT in the first place. You're a star! ♥) And my gift proper was written by DeCarabas, whom I don't know and maybe doesn't LJ, but oh my, they so made my Yuletide with that wonderful piece. (I'm feeling guilty enough about requesting a super-super-obscure and uncool fandom and making someone write in it; I'm now also eyeing the other two comments on it, because it kind of looks as if they haven't actually got what's going on. I said it was subtle; I didn't think it was that subtle, but maybe it was to someone who doesn't know all the stuff I wrote in my letter? (Or maybe it was just the other aspect they chose to comment on??) DeCarabas got so much of that in, really quietly and non-crackily, it was awesome. (But, okay, what Dr Seward thinks he is doing is not necessarily what he is doing/what's really happening. It's brilliant. I love it to pieces. Usefully ambiguous headcanon totally accepted. ♥)

Bookmarks and Garlic Flowers (1061 words) by DeCarabas

Additional Tags: Post-Canon
Summary: On rational explanations.

I guessed two of Liadt's fics, and one of Paranoidangel's, and otherwise, I was as clueless as ever, but it was fun. Here's to the last of the reccing and commenting - and to the New Year's Resolution Collection 2016! (I am resolved to write one this year; last year I didn't and I wished I had.)
lost_spook: (Northanger reading)
I'm back! I'm very tired, so comments and posts will wait/be erratic until I'm not. In the meantime, I'm trying to get some Yuletide recs up before Reveal. I carefully bookmarked on AO3 as I read while away, so hopefully this should be a quiet, simple thing to do?

It's a fairly random first pass of the archive. I tend to read shorter fics, and also have a terrible habit (faced with the chocolate box that is Yuletide) of reading only one or two fics out of a fandom with several in it before skipping to the next shiny thing, but still, an overview of some things I've particularly enjoyed so far, in the hopes that others might enjoy them too:

19 Recs in Archer's Goon, The Avengers, Chalet School, Georgette Heyer (Devil's Cub, False Colours, Frederica), Dracula, Fionavar Tapestry, Forsyte Saga, The Highwayman, Honeysuckle Cottage, I Capture the Castle, Ngaio Marsh, Indiana Jones, Jane Eyre, Jane the Virgin, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and Maid Marian )

More to come later today! (Hopefully! But definitely including my shiny Madness Treat when it does. \o/)

Just dropping by briefly, because Yuletide! Dear flist, I got a fic for Dracula (1968)! And I didn't know what anyone could possibly make of my babblings, but my author (who I hope wasn't left tearing their hair out) wrote this fic, which is just an utterly gorgeous and subtle take on post-canon. It's short but it's got a lot in it - if you have any familiarity with the original Dracula, even if not for this one, please take a look and shower them with the love the fic deserves! (And which, hidden in such an obscure fandom, it might not otherwise get - sorry AGAIN dear author, if you see this!)

It looks as though I should have a little treat tomorrow in Madness, too, so \o.

I hope everyone else taking part is also having a good Yuletide! And Merry Christmas to those (like me) who are celebrating. (I need to go away again, because I must rest before my sister arrives with two very small people that I'm looking forward to seeing!)
lost_spook: (b7 - deva)
1. I have been watching all the usual challenges go up over at [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, waiting for Some Day My Fic Will Come, because this year my Enemy at the Door request would qualify, but alas, Some Day My Fic Will Come has not come and my faithfulness will only be rewarded if some day my fic does come without the help of Some Day My Fic Will Come.

2. In other Yuletide-related silliness, last time I made my Shadow of the Tower request, I went on about the DIY map-making in the show, but I decided to be sensible and leave it at pantomime lions and cardboard spaceships this year. However, I did make a small gif-set on Tumblr and I'm not the only one who was amused by it, most especially Henry's epic food battle map in ep9. (I think there's another instance, but I can't remember.) I don't know why it happens; probably just because the director is Prudence Fitzgerald aka the director who is fine with showing the studio floor, the studio backdrop, having random CSO, super-close-close-ups of James Maxwell and David Collings and probably other people, vaseline on the lens, people talking to camera and whatever else she feels like. (Also, btw, SotT is remarkable because for some reason in 1972 at the BBC, 10 out of the 13 eps were directed by women. It also had a female script editor, a female historical researcher and 1 female writer (2 eps). I don't know why or how, but it's a thing. As is Tudor DIY-map-making.

3. In not entirely unrelated news, I am actually writing up the story where Ace goes on a 'date' with Henry VII that came from this meme. Sadly, though, I am not yet writing the one where Twelve and Cora Mills are buddy cops, nor am I writing the one where Twelve and Henry VII have to run a coffee shop together. Those are still free to a good home if anyone wants to win the internet.

4. And now I had better go, or my mushroom soup I'm making will pay the price for me talking about 1970s telly (again).

Updates

lost_spook: (b7 - deva)
1. In Yuletide, I see that TWO people have offered the 1968 Dracula. I am all faint with the shock. I would have been matchable with just my three nominated super-obscure fandoms! (But possibly difficult.) In celebration, I removed one of my other requests. I was worrying about maybe not wanting it quite as much as the others - and two other people have similar requests so there's a chance of fic I will enjoy anyhow. (I don't think I've ever done that before.)

2. Over on AO3, someone has translated a previous Yuletide fic of mine (Of Elements and Existence) into Russian. I can't read Russian, but putting it in Google Translate suggests (despite its usual incoherency) that they did a good job, as I can certainly recognise my fic coming back at me.

3. I am continuing my voyage into old film! Well, old film containing Margaret Lockwood, anyway. I have now watched her first leading role in the 1938 Carol Reed film Bank Holiday. Not very spoilery review plus gifs )
lost_spook: (b7 - deva)
1. One of the joys of Yuletide is stumbling over things you never knew about before. One this year that amused me muchly was the music video of Shakespeare's Sister's Stay. Now, this is a song that I recorded off the radio when I was a teenager (onto a tape, I'm a historical thingumy) and I was always fascinated by it - I reasoned that it was all one voice and maybe some fairy queen who seemed nice but wasn't (a la some Tam Lin/Thomas the Rhymer thing, because I had been reading Fire and Hemlock by that point), but NO. That is not what it is about!

As it turns out, voice one is a woman trying to get her dying boyfriend to stay with her and voice 2 is Death. Who in this wears a sparkly catsuit and does an outrageous dance because... er... um... it's an 80s music video? My favourite bit is Death's eye-roll at the end because, frankly someone's who's been doing a sparkly OTT catsuit dance like that has no grounds on which to eye-roll at people. Oh, and for some reason, it all seems to be happening in space because why not?

Cut for embed )

Anyway, I'm grateful to the requester because otherwise I would never have watched that and my life would have been the poorer for it.

2. Talking of amusing vids, it's been at least a year or two since I mentioned that Julius Caesar Poker Face vid, and every so often a person just needs to remind themselves that it exists and laugh themselves silly at the combination of Richard Pasco and David Collings and their ridiculously opposite faces set to appropriate-inappropriate pop music. Do not worry if you do not like Julius Caesar, 1970s BBC theatricality, Lady Gaga, or Brutus/Cassius. None of those things should come between you and it:

Cut for embed and Richard Pasco )

3. And now for something completely different, because otherwise I'll forget again, I wrote some more [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales:

Two in the same AU timeline:
Double Cross (PG, 4367 words. Edward Iveson, Julia Graves, Rudy Graves.) Julia’s having nothing but trouble with men – her brother seems to be in danger and Mr Iveson’s trying to buy her off with sandwiches…

Not Just a Passing Phase (PG, 5262 words. Edward Iveson, Julia Graves, Rudy Graves, Elizabeth Long.) The last thing Julia wants is for Mr Iveson to be lying dead in her kitchen with her brother to blame for it…

Faulty Connections (All ages, 1176 words. Anna, Liesa.) Liesa and Anna have the opposite problem when it comes to family.

1. Yuletide noms closed this morning - next up comes the fun! The full tag set, letters appearing, making requests! \o/

(And guess what? I nommed the 1968 TV Dracula as my third fandom. Just as I was about to repent my folly, some nonnie commented on the fandom promotion thread to say that they liked the look of it and that was all the encouragement I needed. So I will have three impossible fandoms on my request list. /sheepish)

But here we go again, folks! *bounces*

2. [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers is having an anniversary Trope Bingo, so I requested a card, because that should make me, you know, actually rec something during the month. Cut for image & mildly NSFW trope names )

3. I made a post to one of my comms - [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts (the Doctor Who mini-table prompt comm*) asking for suggestions for prompt tables. I wondered if anyone here would have any suggestions. There's more details over at the post, and there isn't a desperate need - it's just that I know everyone is so different and I'm very aware that all of these tables were made by me, so I thought it might be quite nice to have some by other people? If anyone has any ideas, or would have joined in if there was a table like x, now's your chance! (Also, if anyone would like to suggest a theme for a table/tables, that would also be cool. I didn't think of that when making the post).

4. I wrote a thing for [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales the other day! And so what, you cry? Well, it was not for Heroes of the Revolution, it was for The Pirate Queen (another of the three fake shows I did at the time, only one that had current actors and was In Space! With Pirates! (Well, Pirates-ish.) I had some thoughts about it, so I might occasionally write some bits for it? I don't know, but there's this, which I did hastily for the Flavour of the Day:

Beneath My Dignity (All ages, 444 words. Lio Hadwin, Arkryte II.) Lio gets lumbered with his nemesis on an away trip.

* It is an awesome comm! You should join! I'm not biased; I didn't make it... Oh, wait, I am, and I did. ;-D

Well, it's being a bit of a rubbish day (& I keep layout-hopping, sorry; I don't think I've finished yet, either), so what better than a completely self-indulgent question from the Summer Talking Meme? It reminds me that sometimes I make things that I like...

So, from [livejournal.com profile] femme_slash_fan: My favourite fiction I've written so far and why.

Oh, Gosh. I mean, it depends on the day, the weather, my mood and whether I'm feeling smug about stuff or wondering in despair and shame why I ever imagined putting pen to paper was a plan.

Anyway, the meme asks for my favourite, not my most popular (although other people liking the fic or not actually does affect the way I think of it) or what I consider to be the best, so here are some favourites (for today, anyway, although they are ones I tend to come back to):

I think this question calls for a certain amount of self-indulgence )

So, I wrote things for Yuletide. Somewhat more than I expected...

Firstly, and most importantly, my assignment, which was for [livejournal.com profile] paranoidangel42. I had, when signing up initially, looked at my list of fandoms I was willing to write and said to myself I might as well have just said I'd write for Paranoidangel. And then laughed, shook my head at myself, reminded myself that Yuletide is a big exchange and added in a bunch of other fandoms... and then got assigned to Paranoidangel! (So, erm, sorry about that - you just got yet more of me instead of somebody new! I had fun writing for you, though! ♥)

Summary:

What has been well-stitched together doesn’t easily fray at the seams.

I'd been rewatching HoE recently and was determined to write fic for it, because there's so little of it, and knew what I wanted to do - a sort of big Bea and Evie across-the-years, culminating in a fixit for the ending. But then it seemed to fall flat in various places, and the ending wasn't quite how I remembered it, thus scuppering my planned final section and I floundered for a while. (I had in my head that Bea and Evie had a big row and, actually, they don't. Evie is angry at everyone, but Bea is muted, almost defeated.) However, eventually, I beat it into shape & hopefully it wasn't too bad! (I've learned by now, though, that I pretty much always feel my assignments are terrible - until the next year, when suddenly I realise that last year's was quite good... but this year's is terrible.)

Anyway, it was fun to write Bea & Evie, and I am still very fond of the series. (Which follows the fortunes of a pair of sisters who set up a London fashion house in the 1920s and is good fun & all up on YT if anyone is interested). I did want to work in more characters, though, and more social history... and, yes, well, possibly being unrealistic? I think in my head I wanted to write a big HofE novel, that's all. At least I finally came up with a title I liked. I had the summary before the fic, but it was in danger of being posted as "Untitled House of Eliott fic" as the deadline approached. (Backstitch is the strongest stitch commonly used for sewing & in gold, obviously, but also because that's how Jack refers to Bea early on. Hmm, I'm not sure now why I changed it from "Backstitch in Gold Thread" because that makes more sense! I shall go change it back.)

And more under the cut! )

Also I now know that it was Clocketpatch who risked complete obscurity by writing me that last minute Public Eye/Sapphire & Steel treat. (Thanks so much, Clocket! You're amazing!) My other wonderful gift was by DesertScribe, who's new to me, but whom I hope hasn't written their last S&S fic, because that one was excellent. ♥
