This must mean today's thing I love is going to have to be Sapphire and Steel.

And since there's been no easily available fandom primer anyway since eponymous_rose tragically locked down their journal and with it the best ever S&S intro, I may as well go full on manifesto here. Because Sapphire & Steel is a very odd series that is not going to be to everyone's taste, but it is truly amazing and original and worth trying if you have any interest in TV SF and a reasonable amount of patience for old time TV.

(I used/adapted some text and pics from an old manifesto for het_reccers on LJ, which is why they have a Photobucket logo on. Sorry about that.)

“There is a corridor. And the corridor is time. It surrounds all things and it passes through all things. You cannot enter into time, but sometimes time can enter into the present… break in and take things. Take people…" (Sapphire, Assignment 1)

S&S starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum and ran from 1979-1982 (on ITV, aka The Other Channel, not the BBC), and while there are only 34x 25min episodes, broken down into six serials, known as "Assignments," it's been highly influential in much SF that's been made since. It was created by PJ Hammond, who'd written for Ace of Wands (UK 1970s fantasy children's series) and would later write two episodes for Torchwood, but is still most famous for Sapphire & Steel. It has the slow pace and low budget values of much British TV of the time - but takes the clever approach of turning both into virtues in a way that can still unsettle modern viewers.

All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic, heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel. Sapphire and Steel have been assigned.

The first rule of S&S is mystery. We don't know who or what Sapphire and Steel are. We know that they're not human, that they have strange powers (including telepathy) and that they are sent by a higher authority to intervene on our behalf against Time, which in the S&S universe is a malevolent force using any means it can to break free and wreak havoc. And by any means, we here mean paintings, photographs, clocks, pillows, motorway service stations, flowers and nursery rhymes. Everything is a potential "trigger" or threat.

PJ Hammond has said in interviews that he has no idea what Sapphire and Steel are, or where they came from. “It’s part of the mystery, not to know… Not knowing has never bothered me.” And: “I don’t think that Sapphire & Steel were ever human in the basic sense. … I think they come closer to representing the spirit and the soul.”

The Guiness Book of TV once summed it up by saying something like "There are many ways to hold a TV audience. Complete lack of explanation is not supposed to be one of them..." And yet, with S&S, it works. And, as you can tell, I love it.

So, basically, that's it. You can already go read the fanfic or run off to YouTube/place you obtain DVDs to watch it. Congratulations!

The main caveat (apart from "it's old TV, it is very static and often beige") is that it originally started as a children's show, and the trappings of that are still apparent in "Assignment 1" so be patient with the two child guest stars etc., as it will only get better from here. (I could advise you to start elsewhere, but you'd miss Lead and the only kind of explanation of the series we ever get, so it's best to give it a go and only skip it if you really can't be doing with the child actors.)

( More pics and much continued lack of explanation and some flailing and fic recs under the cut )

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2011-07-28:938997:872235Fandom Stocking Fic + 1 last stray AU ficlet2019-01-20T21:07:57Z2019-01-20T21:07:57Zpublic0So fandom_stocking went live and I will need to share with you presently the contents of mine, because it was glorious!

But I also managed to write four things, as well as making some icon sets for various people, and here are my efforts in the meantime, plus at long last, my belated AU Meme fill for Servalan:

One Night Stand (3759 words) by thisbluespirit
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sapphire/Silver/Steel (S&S), Silver (S&S)/Everyone, Copper & Silver (S&S)
Characters: Silver (S&S), Steel (S&S), Ruby (S&S), Lead (S&S), Cerium (S&S), Jet (S&S), Copper (S&S), Mercury (S&S), Emerald (S&S), Sapphire (S&S)
Additional Tags: Community: fandom_stocking, Elemental Weirdness, 20th Century, Pre-Canon
Summary: There’s an odd little break-to-be that means a yearly appointment to keep. I had, when signing up initially, looked at my list of fandoms I was willing to write and said to myself I might as well have just said I'd write for Paranoidangel. And then laughed, shook my head at myself, reminded myself that Yuletide is a big exchange and added in a bunch of other fandoms... and then got assigned to Paranoidangel! (So, erm, sorry about that - you just got yet more of me instead of somebody new! But then it seemed to fall flat in various places, and the ending wasn't quite how I remembered it, thus scuppering my planned final section and I floundered for a while. (I had in my head that Bea and Evie had a big row and, actually, they don't. Evie is angry at everyone, but Bea is muted, almost defeated.) However, eventually, I beat it into shape & hopefully it wasn't too bad! (I've learned by now, though, that I pretty much always feel my assignments are terrible - until the next year, when suddenly I realise that last year's was quite good... but this year's is terrible.)

Anyway, it was fun to write Bea & Evie, and I am still very fond of the series. (Which follows the fortunes of a pair of sisters who set up a London fashion house in the 1920s and is good fun & all up on YT if anyone is interested). I did want to work in more characters, though, and more social history... and, yes, well, possibly being unrealistic? I think in my head I wanted to write a big HofE novel, that's all. At least I finally came up with a title I liked. I had the summary before the fic, but it was in danger of being posted as "Untitled House of Eliott fic" as the deadline approached. (Backstitch is the strongest stitch commonly used for sewing & in gold, obviously, but also because that's how Jack refers to Bea early on. Hmm, I'm not sure now why I changed it from "Backstitch in Gold Thread" because that makes more sense! I shall go change it back.)

( And more under the cut! )

Also I now know that it was Clocketpatch who risked complete obscurity by writing me that last minute Public Eye/Sapphire & Steel treat. (Thanks so much, Clocket! You're amazing!) My other wonderful gift was by DesertScribe, who's new to me, but whom I hope hasn't written their last S&S fic, because that one was excellent. ♥

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2011-07-28:938997:455554Found, one meme entry...2014-12-14T18:02:04Z2020-01-11T20:34:17Zpublic31I started this ages ago & then found it again just now, and have finished it off & here it is! It is Public Eye, but it's also a series of crossover vignettes & (I hope) no real knowledge of PE is needed.

I said, when I first watched S4, that there ought to be a companion series where Mrs Mortimer sorted out people's problems at her B&B and though, really, she is too sensible for that to work in the same way, it's still enough for a fic.

Winter Where You Are (4595 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Public Eye (TV), Doctor Who (2005), Doctor Who (1963), Sapphire and Steel, Spooks | MI-5
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Ben Jackson/Polly Wright
Characters: Helen Mortimer, Sapphire (Sapphire and Steel), Steel (Sapphire and Steel), Connie James, Ben Jackson (Doctor Who), Clara Oswin Oswald, Frank Marker
Additional Tags: Crossover, 5 Times, 1960s, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Women Being Awesome
Summary: A seaside boarding house out of season can be a strange place at times - you never know who'll wind up staying for the night...

(Or, as ever, it seemed like a good idea at the time.)

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2011-07-28:938997:367519Yuletide reveals!2014-01-01T20:53:50Z2014-01-01T20:53:50Zpublic2I also wrote stuff, shock, horror!

First, my assignment, which was for butterflymind, who (as it turned out) shares about twenty small fandoms with me, and I matched on two of them in this year's request. I badly wanted to write the one about the characters from the Miss Marple book A Moving Finger, but that didn't happen, and I did have the rough beginnings of a Jonathan Creek fic somewhere that matched the request exactly. Just one problem - I'd set up a typical Jonathan Creek mystery with no solution. (It's amazing what the brain does at need, because suddenly, I could at least come up with something to explain the ballerina, the clown and the vanishing motel...). I would have liked to have had more brain and add a little more mention of random Adam things, and just a smidgeon of something more serious to counterweight all the Maddy-Jonathan banter, but I hope that it is plain that there are feelings going on under here, as it is. Anyway, banter was what my recipient asked for, so overall I'm pleased with it (and very relieved that I caught a minor plot hole before Yuletide actually went live). Happily, my recipient seemed to like it too:

Persistence in Porcelain (4090 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jonathan Creek (TV)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jonathan Creek, Maddy Magellan
Additional Tags: Yuletide
Summary:
Maddy's got a problem involving a ballerina, a clown and a vanishing motel. Obviously, there's only one person who can help. She just probably shouldn't have annoyed him first...

I also wrote two treats out in rough while the letters went up, and finally typed them up after I'd finished my main assignment (I could have done more with the Time Traveller's Guide one if I'd been badly behaved and written things the other way round, but it works. People seemed to like it.) Anyway, reading the letter requesting it, immediately made me think of writing it rather like The Tough Guide to Fantasyland (though it mutated a little from that starting point), and that was what I did. The other, well, the other was a bit of a joke and not exactly very hard to guess as being by me (to say the least), but it came out of a conversation with the recipient, and had to be done.

The Time Traveller’s Guide: Important Additional Information (1722 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England - Ian Mortimer
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary:
Because there are always some people who seem to need the obvious spelling out to them…

Striking A Balance (745 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sapphire and Steel
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Steel (Sapphire and Steel), Sapphire (Sapphire and Steel), Silver (Sapphire and Steel)
Additional Tags: Curtain Fic
Summary:
In which Sapphire and Steel shop for curtains, for inscrutable reasons.

So, overall, it's been a good Yuletide.
