lost_spook: light + Ruth Evershed looking upwards (spooks - Ruth!)
(And then hopefully no more! It takes quite a while to fiddle about and pack up stuff, and spoons too. Also rl was a little busier at the same time.)

1. I have been moving my communities! Some of these are still waiting on import, for various reasons (also the queue is still very long; it's definitely a mass back-up/exodus this time) and so have nothing on them yet, and some of them are more for archival purposes, but most are active or would happily be again, and certainly this mod is around for questions/tagging etc. if anyone else posts:

I moved [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts over here in January, and it is all shiny and ready at [community profile] who_allsorts. I won't close the other, but feel free to switch your claim over (or drop your claim and start a new one at Dreamwidth, I won't tell). Also I probably will only add new tables on this side now.

[livejournal.com profile] dw_straybunnies is now fully imported at [community profile] who_straybunnies! (It hasn't been active for a while, but as long as I'm still here, I'll be fine with people posting to it - it is/was a community for donating Doctor Who fanwork ideas (plotbunnies, if you'll forgive the tweeness, but it makes for a handy name) plus regular discussion of plot ideas we'd like to see and occasional challenges to fill some of the donated prompts.)

[livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest is created now at [community profile] who_guestfest, but I won't import it until this weekend is over, as someone's still trying to write a last fic for this year's fest. Obviously, the ficathon is over for this year, so nothing will be happening there until it runs again.

[livejournal.com profile] house_of_eliott is now in progress to [community profile] house_of_eliott, hopefully before the LJ version entirely crumbles off a cliff. It's very tiny, but it's a general House of Eliott comm. (This is the only one I will be deleting, because it's so very tiny and crumbling and my co-mod has deleted their account, so it's on virtual point of collapse.)

[livejournal.com profile] cakefic is not yet in progress (but will be as soon as HoE finishes) and you'll find it at [community profile] cakefic. It's not exactly very active, I know, but I do mean to finally run a cakeficathon one day (and heaven forfend that cake fic should be lost)! ([personal profile] clocketpatch, shall I make you co-mod again?)

I am also co-mod of [livejournal.com profile] b7friday, which [personal profile] vilakins has imported to [community profile] b7friday and I hope to see if it's possible to revive it over there, as I think quite a lot of the B7 crew are more Dreamwidth based, such as there is in journal-land anyway). [personal profile] vilakins also imported [community profile] b7fic, and already runs [community profile] blakes7 (and foolishly just made me co-mod of both, which is new. Soon, I shall be supreme commander of the Federation and have all the best dresses!)

And I think I really am going to launch Apocabingo soon at [community profile] tic_tac_woe, but more about that anon!

Please feel free to join any of them you like, even the ones that are still slightly works in progress. I do mean to pimp [community profile] who_allsorts and [community profile] b7friday a bit, and of course [community profile] tic_tac_woe once I've firmed up the rules, and we'll see how it goes with the rest.

And, wow, no wonder that's been taking it out of me. *collapses* (Also, if you are not so much on Dreamwidth, or even if you are, and are feeling a little concerned about imported content, claiming your open ID is super-easy and seems to work like magic on assigning those posts and comments to your actual Dreamwidth account (providing you have one, of course) and then that allows you to edit/delete them as with the original.)

2. Also, in order to get me over the transition bump among other things, I've decided to turn off commenting on my crossposts for the next two months (at least). I've been trying to make sure I've granted access to everybody I can think first so you'll still be able to see and comment on flocked entries, but spotting who I've missed is rather like that game where you have a tray of objects and then take one or two away - and I was always rubbish at that game! So if I haven't yet, just point me in your direction at Dreamwidth. I am a terrible turncoat, I know, but I feel very happy about it! I hadn't realised how much worrying about LJ apocalypses was getting me down.

(tl;dr after this entry, you will have to click through on the link to comment, but I have faith in your ability to cope with slight extra clickiness, even if you judge me for it. ;-p)

In other reading, [community profile] hetswap went live today and I had both my gift fic and an unexpected unofficial gift fic (from ParanoidAngel):

My gift fic, a sweet and funny little Emma Swan/Captain Hook fic:

A Little Blue Bottle (2219 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Captain Hook | Killian Jones/Emma Swan
Characters: Emma Swan, Captain Hook | Killian Jones, Henry Mills (Once Upon a Time), Evil Queen | Regina Mills, Rumplestiltskin | Mr. Gold, Violet (Once Upon a Time), Prince Charming | David Nolan, Snow White | Mary Margaret Blanchard
Summary: Emma and Killian go on a date, but something gets in the way of enjoying it fully.

And my unofficial, non-anonymous gift, which was much fun and introduced Evelyn and Six to the cake!fic genre, something that was way overdue, all considered:

Chocolate Cake, a Cardigan and a Coat (1173 words) by paranoidangel
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctor Who (Big Finish Audio)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sixth Doctor, Evelyn Smythe
Additional Tags: Cake, Cake Fic Meme, chocolate cake, Lemon Drizzle Cake
Summary: The Sixth Doctor and Evelyn find themselves chained together and covered in chocolate cake.

So, that was very nice, all round & I enjoyed a few of the other stories in the collection, too.
lost_spook: (I Capture - writing)
And so my treats. I wrote the first for [personal profile] calliopes_pen, chiefly in a hopeless attempt to remain anonymous, so that she might at least wonder which one was me. (I had vague plans for a rather different one, but I got seized by this idea while reading through her likes in the letter):

Influence (1368 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Dracula (TV 1968), Dracula & Related Fandoms
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply

Characters: Abraham Van Helsing, John Seward, Dracula, Jonathan Harker, Lucy Weston, Mina Harker
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Implied/Referenced Mind Control, Dark
Summary: Some personalities are magnetic, they exert an irresistible pull on others.

Then there were two prompts in particular that jumped out at me this year, the first being Wasuremono's great prompt about Miss Marple being a goddess, the genius loci of St Mary Mead, which I obviously had to write:

The Spirit of St Mary Mead (4005 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Miss Marple - Agatha Christie
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jane Marple, Griselda Clement, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Historical, Multi-Era, Roman Britain, English Civil War, 18th Century, 20th Century, 21st Century, Misses Clause Challenge, Miss Marple is a Goddess
Summary: St Mary Mead has had an unusual guardian down through all these centuries.

The second was for moemachina, about Feste & Olivia from Twelfth Night. As I've loved Feste since I did the play for A-Levels mumble years ago, I couldn't resist. I had an idea, but then remembered that writing Shakespeare fic is TERRIFYING. So I watched BBC TN twice in a row, found some 16th C jokes and riddles on the internet, built my fic around those and then went for it. And then typed it up while mentally going LALALA not writing Shakespeare etc. Happily, it seems to have got some really lovely comments, so I clearly didn't mess it up too badly.

movements of the mind (1892 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Twelfth Night - Shakespeare

Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Feste & Olivia (Twelfth Night)
Characters: Feste (Twelfth Night), Olivia (Twelfth Night), Original Characters
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Friendship, Backstory, Jesters, Implied/Referenced Character Death
Summary: ”Look you now, he’s out of his guard already; unless you laugh and minister occasion to him, he is gagged.”

That done, I decided to write a couple of treats for Madness if I could, but the Adam Adamant Lives! fic for Liadt grew large enough for the main collection, even if it was probably too frivolous for Yuletide (and I don't think Liadt was fooled by my anonymity for a minute, either):

Battered and Bruised (1812 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Adam Adamant Lives!
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Adam Adamant & Georgina Jones
Characters: Adam Adamant, Georgina Jones, William E. Simms
Additional Tags: Yuletide Treat, Cake Fic Meme, Cake, Humor, Hijinks & Shenanigans, I was going to label this crack, and then thought soberly about canon, and didn't
Summary: Mr Adamant suffers a truly traumatic incident at a village gala. Unfortunately for him, Georgie is on hand to help...

And lastly, this tiny bit of post-canon for Gerry and Sandra from New Tricks, for Dynapink:

Vintage (532 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: New Tricks
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sandra Pullman & Gerry Standing
Characters: Sandra Pullman, Gerry Standing
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Ficlet, Yuletide Treat
Summary: "You look as if you've seen a ghost..."

With many thanks to Pers who patiently beta-ed all three full treats and a second beta of my long assignment! (Those who have been around these parts a while: I think you can probably already guess which one got the influential rec. Oh, yes. It is my fate, my doom, my only claim to fame.)

1. I defaulted on Not For Prime Time. I know by now I shouldn't sign up for exchanges, excepting only Yuletide (because once a year come hell or high water to see how it goes is a good thing) and possbly Remix (because it works differently). But of course I love exchanges and it's hard to remember that they don't mix well with being ill even in the best circumstances. So I'm kicking myself for giving in and signing up, and also for defaulting on a really lovely assignment that I had a perfectly workable idea for, but I'm immediately a good deal less stressed. Bingos are fine, Runaway Tales, prompts, commentfests, but not exchanges and only some ficathons. I know this by now. *kicks self again*

(When I'm well enough, one day, sometime, never, I shall sign up for ALL THE EXCHANGES. And run some. And ficathons. All of them. Well, maybe, lol.)

2. While not doing NPT, I did quite a lot of family history (tidying, small bits of transcribing and typing up mostly, but more and more consistently than I've managed for six years), which is amazing. If I have been quiet lately, that was one of the reasons.

3. Also I wrote some more ficlets (while not writing my NPT fic, I know, I know. I should be able to do it; it's just never quite that simple). Two more for the meme, one for the Commentfest (it hasn't entirely ended yet):

Gateaux and Glitz (571 words) by lost_spook

Ruined (392 words) by lost_spook
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Sandbaggers
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Sir Geoffrey Wellingham, Neil Burnside, Matthew Peele
Additional Tags: Ficlet, Obscure and British Commentfest, Humor
Summary: Matthew's interests come in handy for once.
lost_spook: (spooks - ruth!)
And, as I said, I also made some things for people:

Falling From A Cloud for [personal profile] akashasheiress (Doctor Who, Ben Jackson/Polly Wright, 346 words. Also a 500 prompts ficlet.)

9 Avengers Icons for [personal profile] glinda (Emma Peel, John Steed.) (Liadt sent me some Avengers! I have only watched 1 episode, but once I've watched more, more icons will happen because it was heaps of fun to play with.)

The Gods Walk Among Us for [personal profile] kaffyr (Doctor Who, Ian & Barbara, Drabble.)

Dance of A Lifetime for [personal profile] azarsuerte (Doctor Who, Five/Clara, 169 words. One of the random drabbles - the poetry line was "and the last stroke of midnight dies").

13 Silmarillion icons for [personal profile] moetushie (Mostly from Ted Naismith images.)

13 The Good Life icons for [personal profile] ozqueen (Tom, Barbara, Margo & Jerry and all combinations thereof.)

Radical Actions for [personal profile] liadtbunny (Er. The Fight Against Slavery, Wilberforce/Pitt cake!fic drabble. Yes. /o\)

The Man Who Cried Lion for eve11 (Doctor Who, Six, Evelyn, 329 words. Poetry line: rushed out onto the fire escape screaming Lion! Lion!)

some lovely perilous thing for [personal profile] ein_papier (Once Upon A Time, Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Drabble. Poetry line as the title "some lovely perilous thing".)

... that was more than it seemed like at the time. :-)

(Obviously, icons made as gifts are not for snagging unless the recipient is okay with that.)
lost_spook: (Default)
Three ficlets - two Element prompts I wrote months and months ago and finally typed up (I have two and half more typed up and I'm not sure how many more lurking in my notebook, so I should get on that) and a hastily written bit of crack for [livejournal.com profile] cakefic (because there's only so long you can play about with random generators before something like that happens).

Also, talking of cakefic, I made a collection on AO3. As this isn't Teaspoon and I can't rampage about wantonly putting people's fics in my series without asking: if you are one of the merry band who've already committed cakefic and you post to AO3, please do add your fics. Otherwise I just look like a very strange cake-obsessive, though I suppose that's nothing unusual.

Also, if you weren't following the last post as closely as I was (it being on my LJ), the Random Cake Fic Generator is now absolutely a thing and has multi-fandom people you will probably recognise, thanks to [personal profile] john_amend_all. \o/

Anyway, enough of cakefic and onto the ficlets:

Eleven and Clara and Cake and Elemental Activity )
lost_spook: (dw - amy)
I was reminded about these when talking about a possible other comm recently and thought it was about time I made a post. You see, when I'm really ill and bored, I sometimes make comms. And then never get well enough to post about them.

Firstly, and most importantly, in about Feb/March, I made a home for all the cake fic: [livejournal.com profile] cakefic! (And, yes, I did let [livejournal.com profile] clocketpatch know. (She's been secret co-mod of the secret comm since March. We are dead stealthy.)

Anyway, made since when I did the 15 characters meme and, as ever, someone on my flist prompted for 10, naked except for 3's cloak and covered in cake, all the fault of [random number], everyone else started going "That should be a thing!". Well, it is a thing. It has been since about 2009, or whenever it actually was. And now it is a thing with a comm!

You should all go and join and post cakefic, fannish cake recipes, recs, art, everything fannish and cake-related, for reasons of there being one more cheering thing in the universe. Its origins lie in Doctor Who, but all fandoms are welcome. It is time the meme spread and took its cakey goodness elsewhere! One day, it should probably have a ficathon hosted on it so that actually happens, but I shall start with unveiling it. (No, Ten, the comm, not you! Three, throw him that cape again. Thank you.)

Also when I was ill in the summer, I thought there should be a Poldark comm, because. There was apparently, but it was members only. I poked it and it did not respond. So I made another: [livejournal.com profile] poldarks. Now it is live, I'll try and at least post news of the upcoming 2015 version and so on. (Liadt, I seem to have cheekily already affiliated it with [livejournal.com profile] oldbrit_tvicons. I trust that's okay?)

There is another I made about two years ago when I was ill and bored, but I'm still working on that. I suspect I might still be working on it when LJ dies, but we'll see.

Anyway, please remind me: when really ill and bored - don't make any more comms... Still, at least I retain enough sense to only make low-maintenance comms. (Well, except for the invisible one, obviously.)
lost_spook: (dw - wee!amelia)
I'm going to do the [community profile] snowflake_challenge! (This is great because last year this time, I was much too unwell. \o/) However, since my last proper post was about Yuletide Reveal and therefore four obscure fics by me, I thought it seemed much nicer and more sensible to swap Days 1 and 2 around, but I shall do 1 tomorrow. (The rules are very laid back, so I feel sure that'll be okay.)

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

And, actually, I do - or I certainly used to do - a lot of reccing, and mostly in obscure fandoms, so stuff that this once. Here are three different things and while lots of people will know about them already, there's always someone who doesn't and is missing out:

1. The Cake!fic series (All Cake and No Clothes)

Once upon a time (or so the tale goes), in the DW forum called Death by Aspirin, [personal profile] clocketpatch made an innocent typo. Before you could blink, there were multiple resulting fics involving Ten, naked (but for Three's cloak), chained to Three and covered in cake, all due to the plotting of the Master.

So, even though I own this series (on Teaspoon, did you know, you can create a series and then put anybody's fics in it you like? It's brilliant. Just think of the chaos/annoyance/inappropriate collections you could cause. Er. Don't actually do that, though...) it in fact contains a varied assortment of hilarious and wonderful fics on the same premise written by some of my very favourite DW authors. You'll find very little smut - it's amazing, isn't it? However, you will find Ten, naked, chained to Three, covered in cake. You will also find a giant lobster, poetry, multiple Masters, the Rani, UNIT, dark!cake!fic, and the New Who Doctors continually robbing Three for spare parts.

What's more, if you feel inspired, you could write your own version. (Any fic even remotely resembling the prompt is fine and I know people were thinking of branching out into other Doctors and Masters and maybe even as yet untried cake flavours...)

2. [personal profile] sallymn's icons. So pretty and funny, basically. If you like icons and haven't yet rifled through her helpfully categorised collection here, then you really should. Main fandoms are: Blake's 7, Primeval, Doctor Who, The Sentinel, LOTR, Criminal Minds, SG1, Magnificent 7, White Collar, Top Gear & Farscape, but there's quite a few non-fannish writing/reading themed icons, or amusing/pretty ones and some extra random fandom icons. (If I ever had enough icon spaces, I would have all the B7 icons by her that I could. And I swear I got into Primeval mostly for the icons.)

3. I've recently been watching a lot of [personal profile] such_heights's fanvids. I think most people will probably know these, but they're gorgeous. The reason I picked on them just now is that they're not only very well done, but each seems to convey a lot of love for the source(s) used and that makes me happy. Enough To Go By (DW, Amy Pond S5-6) and Can't Go Back Now (BtVS, Willow S1-4) I've been rewatching a lot especially, but they all seem to be lovely.

(I think I managed to sneakily get as many recs as I could into three there, didn't I?)
lost_spook: (Fairy godmother)
I think it's now near enough for these. Here are some Doctor Who Christmas fanfic recs (not including any I recced last year!). I'm sorry if you're already fed up with festivities for any reason, but there is also lovely DW-ishness, too. And cake.

Acquired Taste by [livejournal.com profile] primsong
(All ages, 1473 words, Third Doctor, Jo Grant, Sergeant Benton.) This post seems to be full of the fluffiest of Christmas fluff, and here's the first, in which it's Christmas but the Doctor doesn't exactly care for the cake... (And, no this isn't cake!fic in terms of the genre.)

Wait, what, you want actual Christmas cake!fic? Okay:
Just Fruity by [livejournal.com profile] primsong
(All ages, 2611 words, Third Doctor, Brigadier, Sergeant Benton, Tenth Doctor.) You probably know the rules of the cake!fic genre by now: Ten, naked, chained to Three and covered in cake (and possibly also Three's cloak). If you don't know about this important sub-genre of DW fanfic, well... Um... Er...

Christmas in the TARDIS by [livejournal.com profile] calapine
(All ages, 639 words, Fourth Doctor, Romana II). Sweet festive Doctor/Romana fluff.

The Last Christmas by [livejournal.com profile] aralias
(All ages, 2888 words, Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa, Adric, Ainley!Master). There are so many good things I could say about this fic (which had me grinning pretty much all the way through) but I think mentioning that the Master's latest plan involves dressing up as a store Father Christmas should be sufficient. Because you just know he would, too.

A Winter's Tale by [livejournal.com profile] jjpor
(PG, 8164 words, Seventh Doctor, Ace.) And just before the sugar overload gets a bit much, here's one of my favourite Christmas fics that's a bit more serious. (Well, of course it's a favourite: WWI and Seven and Ace, and written by JJPOR? How could it not be?)

Christmas Cutaway by [livejournal.com profile] calapine
(All ages, 1232 words, Eighth Doctor, Grace Holloway) Perfectly characterised festive fluff.

Nog, Cheer and Awe by dblauvelt
(All ages, 1076 words. Bernice Summerfield, Seventh Doctor) The Doctor tries to cheer Benny up. In a sort of impenetrable, NA Doctorish sort of way, which is excellent.

Things To Do in Leadworth in the Snow by [livejournal.com profile] john_elliott
(All ages, 3716 words, wee!Amelia, Jamie McCrimmon, Samantha Briggs, Second Doctor). Wee!Amelia playing in the snow. With Sam and Jamie. Let's finish as fluffily as we started... Aw.
